Ход урока:

Good morning, boys and girls. I’m glad to see you at our lesson.

I) You know, all people have different reading habits: some people cannot live without reading, others don’t read at all – they prefer to watch TV programmes. And what about you? [слайд]

  • Is reading important for you?

  • What kind of reading do you prefer: do you like reading books? newspapers? magazines? What kind of books, newspapers, magazines?

  • How old were you when you began reading? Do you remember what book was the first that you read? What book did you especially like when you were a young child?

  • Have you got any favourite books, favourite authors or favourite characters? Why?

Do you guess what are we going to speak about?

Yes, you’re right. Today we’ll speak about the importance of reading and about your favourite writers.

II) I’ve prepared some quotations of famous people about reading. But they are mixed. Please make up sentences and translate them (a group work – 2 группы. Каждой группе по 3 цитаты.) [слайды]:

  1. I / cannot / live / without / reading. (Thomas Jefferson)

  2. Words / are / the voice / of the / heart. (Confucius)

  3. Reading / is / to the mind / what exercise / is / to the body. (Richard Steel)

  4. A library / is / a hospital / for the / mind. (Anonymous)

  5. Reading / is / a basic tool / in the living of / a good life. (Mortimer J. Adler)

  6. A book / is / a garden / carried / in the pocket. (Chinese proverb)

Check up your sentences with those on the screen, correct the mistakes, if you’ve got any. Кто-нибудь из группы зачитывает уже исправленный вариант и переводит.

III) Your homework was to prepare a small report about your favourite book, writer or character. Remember! You have only 1 minute to tell your classmates about your favourite book, writer or character. What book would you like to read? Why?

Один учащийся рассказывает доклад, а остальные в это время заполняют табл. “Famous Writers”. После всех выступлений я проверяю таблицу с помощью вопросов What books did William Shakespeare write? What books did Joanne Rowling write? What books did Vladimir Korotkevich write?

IV) Now you can say what is reading for you. Finish the phrase «Reading is…».

Физкультминутка:

Let’s have a short rest. Stand up!

Raise your arms above your head,

Now put your hands on your waist,

Bend your knees,

Touch your toes

And now start again!!

V) You know, there are books of different genres. Match the genres of the books with their definitions. [слайд]: detective story, love story, adventure story, fairy tale, biography.

Учащиеся выполняют задание самостоятельно. Затем я говорю: Change your papers and check up with the right answers on the screen. Please, raise your hands who has no mistakes. Well done!!

VI) I wonder how much you read. There are some extracts from very famous books, in my opinion. You should listen to them and try to match them with the names of the books [слайд]. Just put the number near the name of famous books.

На слайде изображены обложки следующих книг, но без номеров. Учащиеся должны возле каждой книги поставить номер этой же книги в записи.

  1. William Shakespeare «Romeo and Juliet»

  2. Rudyard Kipling «The Jungle Book»

  3. Joanne Rowling «Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone»

  4. Mark Twain «The Prince and the Pauper»

  5. Lewis Carroll «Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland»

  6. Arthur Conan Doyle «The Five Orange Pips»

Extracts:

  1. «In the ancient city of London, on a certain autumn day in the second quarter of the sixteenth century, a boy was born to a poor family of the name of Canty, who did not want him. On the same day another English child was born to a rich family of the name of Tudor, who did want him. All England wanted him too. England had so longed for him, and hoped for him, and prayed God for him, that, now that he was really come, the people went nearly mad for joy».

PAUSE

  1. «Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, 'and what is the use of a book,' thought Alice 'without pictures or conversation?'

So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her».

PAUSE

  1. «Well, do not swear: although I joy in thee,

I have no joy of this contract to-night:

It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden;

Too like the lightning, which doth cease to be

Ere one can say 'It lightens.' Sweet, good night!

This bud of love, by summer's ripening breath,

May prove a beauteous flower when next we meet.

Good night, good night! as sweet repose and rest

Come to thy heart as that within my breast!»

PAUSE

  1. «It was seven o'clock of a very warm evening in the Seeonee hills when Father Wolf woke up from his day's rest, scratched himself, yawned, and spread out his paws one after the other to get rid of the sleepy feeling in their tips. Mother Wolf lay with her big gray nose dropped across her four tumbling, squealing cubs, and the moon shone into the mouth of the cave where they all lived. «Augrh!» said Father Wolf. «It is time to hunt again». He was going to spring down hill when a little shadow with a bushy tail crossed the threshold and whined: «Good luck go with you, O Chief of the Wolves. And good luck and strong white teeth go with noble children that they may never forget the hungry in this world».

PAUSE

  1. «Welcome to Hogwarts», said Professor McGonagall. «The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. The Sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory, and spend free time in your house common room.

The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each house has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards».

PAUSE

  1. «As evening drew in, the storm grew higher and louder, and the wind cried and sobbed like a child in the chimney. Sherlock Holmes sat moodily at one side of the fireplace cross-indexing his records of crime, while I at the other was deep in one of Clark Russell's fine sea-stories until the howl of the gale from without seemed to blend with the text, and the splash of the rain to lengthen out into the long swash of the sea waves. My wife was on a visit to her mother's, and for a few days I was a dweller once more in my old quarters at Baker Street».

PAUSE

Hand your papers, please. I’ll check them up for the next lesson.

Затем я снова вывожу слайд со списком книг. What books have you read?

Моё заключительное слово: I recommend you to read more, because reading is a temple of knowledge!!
