The appearance of school uniforms
Great Britain is the country where the school uniform appeared. It happened in the XVI century. School costumes were not similar to their modern models, and their goal was to teach children to discipline. The school at Christ's Hospital obliged its students to wear uniforms, which we wear to this day. In the past, clothes for schoolchildren were sewn from a fabric that was dyed with blue dye, and now the uniform in this school is black
For centuries, school uniforms have been mandatory in all schools in the British Isles. At the moment, in some schools, students do not wear school uniforms, but most still follow the traditions. It is believed that a single form unites students and equalizes them. At the same time, school costumes of some prestigious educational institutions are a sign of belonging to a certain class
The classic version
Over time, the form has changed, however, since the 50s of the XX century, the classic version has stayed to this day. School uniforms for boys include shorts or long trousers for older children, a jacket, a sweater, a vest, a shirt, a tie, simple shoes and, in some cases, a headdress and outerwear. All elements of the uniform are made in traditional colors for a particular school, jackets, sweaters, ties and shirts are often decorated with the school's logo and other symbols. The female version usually differs only in the presence of a skirt or sundress instead of trousers and knee socks. In most schools, in addition to summer and winter uniforms, there is also an option for holidays and special events.
Individual uniform
- Some English schools want to make the form more individual, for example, students can take part in this development. The use of high technology and environmental safety is another trend of British school fashion. So, the production of school uniforms from recycled waste has become very popular – blazers and trousers from plastic bottles are no worse in wear.
- Besides, if the school management is democratic, the classic version of the uniform can replace a more comfortable one – T-shirts, jeans, hoodies and so on.
In some schools pupils also wear blazers with the school badge on the pocket. They often have to wear some kind of hat on the way to and from school – caps for boys and berets for girls.
Shoes are usually black or brown. And no high heels.
Some schools have unisex uniforms—a shirt, a or blazer and sometimes trousers of a given colour.
sweater
Uniforms may vary according to the time of year. At many schools, students wear lighter uniform clothing during the hotter months of the school year. However, at some schools students have to wear long sleeved shirts, ties, wool sweaters, blazers, wool skirts or jumpers, and knee socks or tights in any season and weather.
Good things about school uniform

Designs are often old-fashioned and ugly.
- Forcing children to wear uniform can ignore their religious and
cultural needs.
- Wearing a school uniform is not good preparation for working.
Only a few jobs require uniforms, and many of these are
low-paid service jobs.
- Skirts or formal trousers are not good for doing sport or running
around at lunchtime or breaks.
- Some uniforms are a bit too casual and can look not very neat.
- They can be very expensive.
- You can get fed up of wearing the same old, same old every day.
- You get into trouble if you don't wear uniform.
- Uniform is often not practical or pleasant to wear.
School uniforms are really necessary in any educational institution. It teaches children discipline and order. Also with the help of it you can eliminate competition among students after all, no one would think to arrange a beauty contest where there are rules prescribing the wearing of special school uniform.
