Green Cross International
- Green Cross International is an environmental organisation founded by former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1993 In January 1990 during an address to the Global Forum on Environment and Development for Survival , President Mikhail Gorbachev brought up the idea for an organisation that would apply the medical emergency response model of the International Committee of the Red Cross to ecological issues and expedite solutions to environmental problems
Mission
- The mission of Green Cross International is to help ensure a just, sustainable and secure future for all by fostering a value shift and cultivating a new sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility in humanity's relationship with nature.
Green Cross International works in the following areas:
- Prevention and resolution of conflicts arising from environmental degradation;
- Provision of assistance to people affected by the environmental consequences of wars and conflicts;
- Promotion of legal, ethical and behavioural norms that ensure basic changes in the values, actions and attitudes of government, the private sector and civil society, necessary to build a sustainable global community.
World Wide Fund for Nature ( WWF )
- The World Wide Fund for Nature is an international non-governmental organization working on issues regarding the conservation , research and restoration of the environment , formerly named the World Wildlife Fund , which remains its official name in Canada and the United States . It is the world's largest independent conservation organization with over 5 million supporters worldwide
Mission
- The group says its mission is "to halt and reverse the destruction of our environment".Currently, much of its work focuses on the conservation of three biomes that contain most of the world's biodiversity : forests , freshwater ecosystems, oceans and coasts . Among other issues, it is also concerned with endangered species , pollution and climate change .
Bellona Foundation
- The Bellona Foundation is a multi-disciplinary international environmental NGO based in Oslo, Norway. Founded in 1986 by Frederic Hauge and Rune Haaland as a direct action protest group, it has since blossomed into a recognized technology and solution-oriented environmental champion with offices on two continents.
- The Bellona Foundation was sponsored between 2005 and 2008 by the Norwegian oil company Statoil
Mission
- Bellona and Statoil have opposing views on important environmental issues, but they both acknowledge that dialogue can be an important tool in order to promote better environmental standards. Through objective dialogue and by challenging each other they hope to further the development of new and better solutions for tackling the global climate challenges through the development of forward-looking solutions.
United Nations Environment Programme
- The United Nations Environment Programme ( UNEP ) is an international institution (a programme, rather than an agency of the UN) that coordinates United Nations environmental activities, assisting developing countries in implementing environmentally sound policies and practices . It was founded as a result of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in June 1972
UNEP's main activities are related to:
- climate change;
- disasters and conflicts;
- ecosystem management;
- environmental governance;
- environment under review;
- harmful substances; and
- resource efficiency.
Greenpeace
- Greenpeace began in 1971 when a group of activists put themselves directly in harm’s way in order to protest nuclear testing off the coast of Alaska. Believing that concerted action from ordinary people is the best way – according to their signature quote from Margaret Mead , the only way – the organization has helped to stop whaling, nuclear testing, as well as leading efforts to protect Antarctica. Over 2.5 million members worldwide.
- The Sierra Club, founded in 1892, is one of the oldest conservation organizations in existence. (You can read more about it in the overview of the modern environmental movement .) With over 1.3 million members, this organization is one of the most effective and powerful at effecting changes in government and corporate America. Fighting for the preservation of land and forest, clean air and water, and a host of other issues, the Sierra Club is well-known and respected.
- Forest Stewardship Council
- Certification from the FSC is essential for a green retailer to have genuine “eco cred”. Environmental labels and certifications are not globally standardized, but FSC is one you can trust. This non-governmental nonprofit was established to protect forests. Located in 46 countries, the FSC helps companies, governments and communities with proper forest management and accredidation. Though there are many certifications in the green world, the FSC is the only one that:
- prohibits conversion of natural forests or other habitat around the world
- prohibits the use of highly hazardous pesticides around the world
- prohibits the cultivation of genetically modified trees (GMOs)
- respects the right of indigenous peoples around the world
- controls each certified operation at least once a year – and if they are found not to comply, the certificate is withdraw
