Aims:To write a short story, guessing meaning from context, working in pairs

Grade: 8th form

1. Org. moment

Good morning dear guests and pupils. We are glad to see you here. So how are you?Let’s start our lesson. Today our theme is in the mountains on page 122 in Sts book so open your books and look at the photos and think words associated with mountains. Ice, rope(what do these words mean)

Ok now read the text in the mountains and tell me what is this text about?

Answer C

Now say all the new words in the list and repeat them and let’s translate together with your dictionary.

Now here we have 8 sentences they are all false you should correct them

Answer my questions

1. How did Simon help Joe? (he lowered him down the mountain on a rope)

Was it possible for joe to get down on his own? (No)

2. Why was it so hard to see ?(Because the weather was terrible)

3. Could Simon pull him up?(No)

4. How long had he waited before he cut the rope? (for more than an hour)

5. What did Joe have to do before he could start moving back towards the camp?(he had to get out of the crevasse)

6. When did Simon realise that Joe was still alive?(three days later in the middle of the night. He heard Joe calling his name. )

Answers

1. Simon knew he could probably get back safely on his own, but he risked his life to save Joe.

2. Simon couldn’t see the precipice. He lowered Joe over it by mistake.

3. It was impossible for Joe to climb back

4. Simon cut the rope because Joe’s weight was pulling him towards the edge of the precipice

5. He couldn’t walk. He hopped and crawled for several days

6. When Joe reached the camp Simon was still there.

7. Joe knew that Simon had done everything possible to save him.
