Урок английского языка в 8 классе

Тема «Rainforests»

Цель: 1) создание условий для формирования коммуникативных навыков по теме «Ecological problems» (rainforests),

2) создание условий для развития памяти, внимания, мышления, языковой догадки, критического мышления,

3) формирование представления о необходимости заботиться об окружающей среде, быть ответственными за окружающий мир и природу.

Оборудование: интерактивная доска, ноутбуки, раздаточный материал.

  1. Организационный момент. Приветствие. Определение критериев успешной работы: active work, correct pronunciation, correct use of grammar and vocabulary, being polite and attentive listening

T: Good morning, dear children. How are you today?

Read the criteria of successful work at our lesson.

  1. Психологический настрой на урок.

T: To make you feel good and happy let’s do the following exercise.

Make an animal. Make a tree. Make a flower. Make an insect.

Students have to show these kinds of flora and fauna.

  1. Деление на группы.

Students get cards with different kinds of animals and plants and have to choose their class.

Mammals: manul, marmot, wild boar, deer.

Insects: bee, ant, dragonfly, butterfly.

Plants: tulip, leek, elm, birch

Birds: sparrow, seagull, black bird, pelican

Students get different tasks to define the theme of the lesson.

G1: Make new words using the word “rain(y)”. They have a list of words and choose the necessary ones. The words: coat, proof, bow, negotiation, boy, water, weather, season, forest

G2, G3: Make new words and match pictures.

To define the theme: Tropical region of the world where it rains a lot. Important environmental areas.

Students have to read and decide if these statement true or false.

  1. The rainforest are in danger.

  2. The biggest forests are in the South America, Africa and South East Asia.

  3. Rainforest cover 20 percent of the Earth surface.

  4. A rainforest can be described as a tall, dense jungle.

C level: Students are ecologists. They have to listen and present ecological problems

B level: Students have to tell about flora and fauna of rainforests.

Tropical rainforests support the greatest diversity of living organisms on Earth. Although they cover less than 2 percent of Earth’s surface, rainforests house more than 50 percent of the plants and animals on Earth.

  • There are 3000 plant species from 210 different families in the rainforest.

  • The roots of rainforest trees do not grown deep down into the ground; instead, they spread out. This is because the soil in rainforests is not very deep.

Here are some examples of the richness of rainforests:

  • Rainforests have 170,000 of the world’s 250,000 known plant species.

  • the United States has 81 species of frogs, while Madagascar, which is smaller than Texas, may have 500 species.

  • Europe has 570 butterfly species, while Manu National Park, a single reserve in Peru, has 1,300 species.

Rainforests have many plants and animals for the following reasons:

  • Climate: because rainforests are located in tropical regions, they receive a lot of sunlight. The sunlight is converted to energy by plants through the process of photosynthesis. Since there is a lot of sunlight, there is a lot of energy in the rainforest. This energy is stored in plant vegetation, which is eaten by animals. The abundance of energy supports an abundance of plant and animal species.

  • The canopy structure of the rainforest provides an abundance of places for plants to grow and animals to live. The canopy offers sources of food, shelter, and hiding places, providing for interaction between different species. For example, there are plants in the canopy called bromeliads that store water in their leaves. Frogs and other animals use these pockets of water for hunting and laying their eggs.

It is important to note that many species in the rainforest, especially insects and fungi, have not even been discovered yet by scientists. Every year new species of mammals, birds, frogs, and reptiles are found in rainforests.



A1: Students are given pictures and sentences. They have to match them. There are 2 pictures which students have to describe themselves.

There is deforestation in the Amazon rainforest in northern Brazil.

Tropical rainforests are forests with tall trees, warm climates, and lots of rain.

Rainforests have a great number of plants and animals.

Humans are the main cause of rainforest destruction. We are cutting down rainforests for many reasons, including: wood for both timber and making fires; agriculture for both small and large farms; land for poor farmers who don’t have anywhere else to live; grazing land for cattle; pulp for making paper.

Flying over the heart of the Amazon is like flying over an ocean of green: an expanse of trees broken only by rivers.

  6. I’ve presented our ideas to the classmates (Я представил(а) свое задание классу)

  7. I’ve understood the text and done the exercises (Я понял(а) текст и выполнил упражнения к нему)

  8. I’ve made the cinquain (Я сделал(а) синквейн)

  9. I can tell about rainforests (Я могу рассказать о тропических лесах)
