1.Leading-in stage (W)

Teacher shows the picture (handout 1) and ask students what they think when they look at the picture. Teacher accepts all answers.

  1. (I) Students talk about ideas and answer 3 questions: What problems do these pictures illustrate? Why do we speak about ecological problems? What should we do to solve the problems?

Differentiation: Less able students are given thinking time to make up a sentence.

  1. Reading (handout 2)

Read the text “Ecological Problems” Ecology is a science which studies the relationship between all forms of life on our planet and the environment. Since ancient times Nature has served Man, giving him everything he needs: air to breathe, food to eat, water to drink, wood for building and fuel for heating his home.  For thousands of years people lived in harmony with the environment and it seemed to them that the resources of Nature had no end or limit. With the industrial revolution our negative influence on Nature began to increase.  Large cities with thousands of polluting plants and factories can be found nowadays all over the world. They pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the fields where our crops are grown. Big cities suffer from smog. Cars with their engines have become the main source of polluting in industrial countries. Vast forests are cut down everywhere for the needs of industries. As a result many kinds of animals, birds, fish and plants are disappearing nowadays. The pollution of the air and the world’s oceans and the thinning the ozone layer are the other problems arising from men’s careless attitude to ecology.

Active measures should be taken to save the life on our planet. There is an international organization called Greenpeace which is doing much to preserve the environment.

Students will read the text and answer the questions:

  1. Why are the wild animals in danger?

  2. What climatic changes are the most threatening?

  3. Is there any way to make our air cleaner

  4. What is Green Peace?

  5. What are the main ecological problems?

Differentiation: Less able students can work in pairs.

3) Making a poster: Learners are split in groups of 3-4 children and prepare a poster “Ecological problems”, for example, about ideas how people do not care about environment and how they can solve the problem, then present it to the classmates. Students listen and assess a group presenting a poster according criteria:

  1. Poster is colourful. 2. There are some ideas presented. 3. Speakers sound clearly

Differentiation: Less able students are given some help from peers. Students present their posters and express their ideas in front of the class.

Teacher provides open class discussion.

4) Plenary

Teacher asks students to write a reflection of the lesson.

3 – new words

2 – adjectives to describe the lesson

1 – one activity you like

Feedback: Teacher asks students what task was difficult to them and which pair

worked well.

Additional information

Differentiation – how do you plan to give more support? How do you plan to challenge the more able learners?

Assessment – how are you planning to check learners’ learning?

Critical thinking

Differentiation by support

More support:

  • Some questions are more difficult than others

  • Allow thinking time.

More-able learners:

  • Encourage students to use previously learned vocabulary.

  • The teacher will observe and guide the students helping with their questions. Oral formative assessment

Students try to express opinions

Summary evaluation

What two things went really well (consider both teaching and learning)?

What two things would have improved the lesson (consider both teaching and learning)?

What have I learned from the lesson about this class or individuals that will inform my next lesson?
