What’s the difference between was and were?

Урок 27. Английский язык 4 класс ФГОС

Глагол to be в прошедшем времени имеет две формы: was и were. В этом уроке ребята узнают, с какими местоимениями используется глагол was, а с какими – глагол were. Затем главные герои расскажут учащимся о том, как образуются утвердительные, отрицательные и вопросительные предложения с этими глаголами. В конце урока ребята смогут выполнить два упражнения на закрепление знаний.

Конспект урока "What’s the difference between was and were?"

Hello, boys and girls! My name is Bobby.

And my name is Tobby. This is our friend Mobby.

Welcome to our lesson.

Today we have a guest. It’s Liam.

Hi, everyone!

Liam, you look really scared! What’s wrong?

Guys, I don’t know how to say that!

Oh, come on! Tell us everything!

All right!

Yesterday my friend called me and offered to go for a walk. I agreed. We decided to meet each other in the park at 7 o’clock in the evening.

I didn’t want to be late, so I went to the park earlier. I was waiting for my friend, when suddenly two clowns appeared in front of me. They looked really angry. I wanted to run away, but then I decided not to show my fear. After a little while the clowns started talking to me.

Hello, little boy!

Hello.

What are you doing here all alone?

I’m waiting for my friend. When he comes, we will go for a walk!

No, I don’t think so.

Erm… I’m sorry, but I don’t understand you!

Oh, really? Listen to what my friend will say to you and you’ll understand everything!

We will give you two tasks. And you will have to do them by 9 o’clock in the evening.

No, I’m not going to do your tasks!

If you don’t do them, you will regret about it!

Oh, really? I’ll run away from you and you’ll never find me!

You can try!

After these words, the clowns disappeared. I tried to run away, but the next moment they appeared in front of me.

Wait! How did you do that?

It doesn’t matter!

Here you are! These are your tasks!

But what if I don’t do them on time?

Oh, we will just find and grab you!

After that the clowns disappeared.

Guys, what should I do? I’m so scared!

Liam, first of all, come down!

Now tell us, did you look through the tasks?

Yes, I did. They are connected to the verb “to be” in the Past Simple Tense. And I know nothing about this verb.

Oh, but we know everything about it!

Really? Guys, will you help me?

Yes, of course!

We don’t have much time, so let’s start!

Now I think you understand that today in the lesson we will:

talk about the verb “to be” in the Past Simple Tense;

And

put the knowledge into practice.

Before we do the clowns’ tasks, let’s talk about the verb “to be”.

It’s translated as “есть, являться, быть, находиться”.

The verb “to be” has two forms in the Past Simple Tense:

Was

And

Were.

We use “was” with the pronouns: I, he, she, it.

For example:

I was

He was

She was

It was

And we use “were” with the pronouns: we, you, they.

For example:

We were

You were

They were

Now let’s discuss how we can form the sentences with “was” and “were”.

To form positive sentences, we put the subject in the first place. After that we need to use the words “was” or “were”.

Let’s look at the examples:

The crocodile was hungry.

Or

The kids were in their beds.

To form negative sentences, we need to put the subject in the first place. Then we need to use the words “was” or “were”. And after that we put the particle “not”. The short form of “was not” is wasn’t and the short form of “were not” is weren’t.

Look at the examples:

The lion was not (or wasn’t) angry.

Or

The monkeys were not (or weren’t) in the jungle.

To form questions, we need to put the words “was” or “were” in the first place. And after that we put the subject.

Let’s look at the examples:

Was the frog in the swamp?

Or

Were the cats in the bedroom?

To give short answers to the questions, we can use one of the following two constructions:

The first construction:

In the first place we put the word “yes”. After that we use the personal pronoun.

And then we need to put the words “was” or “were”.

And the second construction:

In the first place we put the word “no”. After that we use the personal pronoun.

And then we need to put the words “was” or “were” with the particle “not”.

Liam, we’ve told you everything about the verb “to be” in the Past Simple Tense.

Now let’s do the clowns’ tasks!

And the first task is to complete the sentences using the words “was” or “were”.

The sentences are:

My dad … ill.

They … angry.

I … sleepy.

The cats … scared.

The coffee … too hot.

The pizza … delicious!

And

My friends … happy!

Let’s check the right answers.

Was

Were

Was

Were

Was

Was

Were

And the second task is to look at the pictures and give short answers to the questions.

Was Megan at work?

Let’s check the right answer.

No, she wasn’t.

Were Max and Kyle in front of the supermarket?

Let’s check.

Yes, they were.

Was Tom at school yesterday?

Let’s check the right answer.

Yes, he was.

Were the girls at home?

Check yourselves.

Yes, they were.

Was the boy afraid of dogs?

Let’s check the right answer.

No, he wasn’t.

And

Were the books on the bed?

Let’s check.

No, they weren’t.

Liam, all the tasks are done!

Great! Thank you so much for your help, boys!

No problem, Liam.

Now you need to run to the park! Hurry!

Oh, yes! You’re right! Bye, boys!

Bye, Liam.

Oh, look who’s here!

Did you do all our tasks, little boy?

Yes, I did!

I don’t believe you! Let me see.

Here you are.

Oh, it’s true! You disappointed us, but we must keep our promises.

It means that we have to let you go!

Bye, clever boy!

After these words the clowns disappeared. Liam was so happy!

That’s all for today, our dear friends!

See you soon.
