Good morning! I am glad to see you. How are you today?
Let’s start our lesson. The topic of our lesson is “Teenage Years - Do They Bring Luck?”
What is it?
P1: the numbers
P2: it is the year
What was the year devoted to?
P3: The Youth Year or The Year of the Youth
Right. In December 17, 2008 The President of the Russian Federation Dm. Medvedev announced 2009 as the Year of the Youth. Why did they do it?
P4: Today our future depends on the youth. Unfortunately young people nowadays face a lot of problems and the Government will try to come across and solve some of them.
3. Word-building.
You are absolutely right. We have talked a lot about teenagers, their life, subcultures. The topic of our today’s discussion is “Teenage Years - Do They Bring Luck?”. We will speak about you, teenagers, about your lives and problems. But I have a question to you: “What does the word a teenager mean?”
P1: To my mind, a teenager is a person at the age from 12 to 16.
I can’t agree with you. Who has another opinion?
P2: I don’t know exactly but may be teenagers are children who are from 13 to 17.
Well, let’s look at this word, at its word-building. It consists of two words: teen and ager. The numerals from 13 to 19 are formed with the suffix-teen. And the word “ager” means somebody at a definite age. Now tell me, please, whom we can name as a teenager?
P3: A teenager is a boy or a girl who is from 13 to 19 years old. (at the age from 13 to 19).
4. What does it mean to be a teenager?
I would like to ask you one more question What does it mean to be a teenager? Some senior students from our school have tried to answer this question. Please, watch the survey.
T: You have listened to your schoolmates and I want you to answer the same question. What do you think about being a teenager?
5. Listening comprehension.
And now You will hear three teenagers answering the same question. Choose from the list A – D a sentence that describes each speaker.
Use letters only once. There is one extra letter which you do not use.
Being young is a kind of duty and makes you feel responsible for what you do.
Being young allows you to do exciting and wonderful things.
It is time for watching serious programmes.
It is time that brings a lot of serious problems.
Speaker 1 – D
He speaks about different problems that worry teenagers and adults. (violence, teen pregnancy, AIDS cases are increasing)
Speaker 2 – A
She says that being a teenager is a chore. You have to go to school and your parents want you to get good grades.
Speaker 3 – B
He says that if teens want to become addicted to bad habits, they can do it. Being a teen is a great fun.
John McCarthy, 17
Teenagers today have a lot more to worry about than their parents ever did. The world is becoming a very scary place. Violence, teen pregnancy, and AIDS cases are increasing . More and more teens are turning to drugs and alcohol. I’m sure that almost every teenager will at one time or another have an experience with drugs, alcohol and sex. These things combined with personal problems and mates’ influence make being a teenager very difficult. I don’t have a single friend who has never had a drink of alcohol. Some of them don’t drink at all now, but some do. It seems to me that adults are generally quite indifferent to what their children do. Once you reach the age of sixteen or seventeen, your parents think you are old enough to decide for yourself and let you do what you want.
Estelle Hammersley, 16
It’s true that there are so many problems facing teens today. I go to an all-girls private school which makes my school life easier. I focus more attention on doing my work than on impressing a cute guy. But when I go out on weekends there is a lot of pressure to drink and smoke. There are no teen clubs close to where I live so weekend activities are limited. My friends and I don’t do anything exciting, but we usually have fun just being around each other. We usually talk about humorous things. On the other hand, we also talk about serious things like abortion, sex, and politics.
My friends and I try to help each other if we can, because a lot of the time, being a teenager isn’t fun. It’s a chore (duty). You have to go to school and your parents want you to get good grades, which is hard enough in itself, and you have to deal with your own problems too.
Bart Naik, 16
Where I live teenagers have few dangers, but even in my town kids can get alcohol easily. I personally do not drink alcohol. I don’t think drinking is exciting. But I know some guys who do. My view is that if they want to, then they can – it’s their life, they are free to decide and nobody can forbid them to do what they want.
The people I hang about (слоняться) with don’t really put any pressure (оказывать давление) on me or anyone else. Dating is not a big deal (not so important).
6. Watching a Video.
Whose idea does the video support? (Speaker 1) What scenes impressed you?
What is the video about?
Reading for detail.

P8 : John and Estelle think their life isn’t so lucky as it may seem because they face different problems. They are surrounded by alcohol, drugs and sex problems. Who is optimistic and pessimistic?
Discussion.
T: Some of your classmates were divided into 2 groups – optimists and pessimists. I would like you to listen to their opinion and say who you agree or disagree with.
Complaints and advice.
1. T: As far as I know, some of you are fond of reading magazines for young people. It seems to me that in many magazines, you, especially, girls pay much attention to so-called problem page where you can find teen’s letters, complaints, advice and so on. And I want you to listen to the girl’s letter in Russian and render it in English.
2. T: Let’s write rules for parents.
Parents! Try to understand your children.
Be friendly when our friends come to visit us.
Remember that we need our private places.
Don’t clean our rooms – we can not find anything after your cleaning.
Allow your children to keep animals at home.
Let children choose their clothes and haircut by themselves.
And explain me why I can not eat in front of the TV. I think this rule is silly.
And now read your rules.
Rules for parents”
Complete the sentences (instead of dots)
Try …………. your kids
Be ………… when our friends come to visit us.
Remember that we need …………
Allow children to …………
Children can choose their ………… by themselves.
Not to eat in front of TV is a …………. rule.
Pay attention to the problem page, taken from the magazine for the young and independent.
Test yourself.
What do you know about the age limits in Britain?
What do the parents forbid these teenagers to do?
Summing up. Conclusion.
T: Our discussion is very interesting and useful. But because of shortage of time we’ll continue it another time.
So, what is your own attitude towards teenage years? What does growing up mean for you? Share your opinions with your classmates.
P10: Being a teenager isn’t very easy for me. We have to go to school and parents want we to get good marks. We have a lot housework as well. I’m sure that a teenager isn’t fun. I feel that It’s a chore.
P11: As for me, being a teenager is very serious. Sometimes it is even dangerous because violence, teen pregnancy, and AIDS cases are increasing. But at the same time being a teenager is being with friends and having everything for the first time.
P12: I think that being a teenager is a chore first of all. On the one hand, you have to go to school and to do homework. We also have to do some housework. As for me, I can say that I’m lucky because my parents don’t make me do a lot of housework. But I understand that it is my duty to help my parents. That’s why I do some housework.
On the other hand, there are a lot of scary things in our world. They are violence, drugs, alcohol and others. Sometimes friends influence your life. I think I’m lucky twice because there is no pressure to drink and smoke.
There is a lot of dangerous things but we are too young to see only bad sides of life. But I can also agree that teenage years are great. We are young, alive, unique. We have time to have fun and rest. Our life has only begun!
T: In conclusion I want to say that youth is very important period in the life of people. This is the time when a person discovers the world and tries to determine his/her place in the universe. Young people face lots of problems which are very important for them. But you have friends, parents, teachers who can help you in difficult situations. Take it easy. You can paint your life red and be happy. The main thing is that you are young and your life has only begun.
Listening to the song “What a wonderful life!” by Louis Armstrong.
I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.
I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.
The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They're really saying I love you.
I hear babies cry, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll never know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world.
