The city was elected on 4 July 2007, during the International Olympic Committee Session in Guatemala City.
The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games, was a major international multi-sport event celebrated from 7 to 23 February 2014, in Sochi, Russia with some events held in the resort town of Krasnaya Polyana .
Following Olympic tradition, Sochi mayor Anatoliy Pakhomov received the Olympic flag during the closing ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.
The Games' official slogan, Hot. Cool. Yours. (Жаркие. Зимние. Твои.), was unveiled on September 25, 2012, 500 days before the opening ceremony
It represented the "passion" of the Games' athletes, climate of Sochi itself, and a sense of inclusion and belonging.
The mascots of the Olympic Games are the Leopard, the Polar Bear, and the Hare, representing the three places on the Olympic podium.
The mascots of the Paralympic Games are the Snowflake and the Ray of Light.
The Games were organised in two clusters: a coastal cluster for ice events in Sochi, and a mountain cluster located in the Krasnaya Polyana Mountains. The mountain cluster in Krasnaya Polyana was home to all the skiing and sliding sports.
The torch relay lasted 123 days and measured over 64,000 km in length, encluding Earth orbits in space. A total of 14,000 torch carriers took part in the relay.
The Olympic flame was taken to the Caucasus' tallest peak — Mount Elbrus , lowered to the bottom of Lake Baikal , and visited the North Pole and the International Space Station .
The opening ceremony took place on February 7, 2014. It was mainly focused around Russian cultural aspects.
Classical Russian music, history, as well as well recognized landmarks, traditional dances and literary figures were recognized in the ceremony. More than 3,000 people from artistic groups participated in dance, ballet, acrobatic and circus performances during the opening ceremony which was watched by a 40,000 audience at Sochi's Fisht Olympic Stadium .

The territory of the Games was closed to public access during the Olympics.
The territory was controlled by FSB (Federal Security Service); airspace was controlled by air defense brigades of the Russian army and the Kuban Cossack Brigade which is native to the Krasnodar Territory that contains Sochi and has been given powers to check identification and detain criminals in the region .

The Cossacks accompanied police patrols in full traditional uniform. Typical Cossack costume includes elaborate tunics, fur hats, and even swords.
