Конспект урока "Confusable words landscape, view and scenery"

—   Hello, our dear friends! My name is Martin Green. This is James Wilson.

—   And my name is Nathaniel Fleming.

—   Welcome to our lesson!

—   Today we would like to start the lesson with three short stories.

—   Listen to these stories and you’ll find out the topic of our lesson today.

One.

—   Hey, Marcus. Tell me everything about your trip.

—   Oh, it was amazing.

—   Where did you finally decide to go? I know that the manager of the travel agency had been offering you many different variants.

—   Yes, it’s true. There were lots of variants, but it had always been my dream to travel to Georgia. As a result, we decided to go there.

—   Wow… Georgia! I really like your choice. It’s a beautiful country.

—   Yeees! Georgia has lots of picturesque scenery.

Two.

—   Bobby, let’s climb this mountain. It’s the largest one.

—   Christopher, why do we need to do that? It’s very dangerous!

—   I know, Bobby, but… just imagine! We will climb this mountain and then we will be standing there and admiring the landscape.

—   Oh, I see. It sounds really interesting and exciting. Let’s do it!

—   Great! First of all, let’s go to the store and buy all the necessary equipment.

Three.

—   Oh, Bradley, I’m afraid I’ve lost my inspiration.

—   Well… Can you draw a picture without it?

—   No, I don’t think so.

—   All right! Let’s find your inspiration then.

—   How will we do that?

—   Oh, I’ve got an idea. Let’s open the window.

—   Okay. Oh, wow… What a view!

Now let’s look through the stories once again. Pay attention to the underlined words.

In the first story we used the word “scenery”.

In the second – we used the word “landscape”.

And in the third story we used the word “view”.

—   The meanings of all these words are very similar, but there is a difference between them.

—   Do you know what the difference is?

—   Well… We will find it out in a few minutes.

Now I think you understand that today in the lesson we will:

·        talk about confusable words “landscape”, “view” and “scenery”;

And

·        put the knowledge into practice.

—   First of all, let’s discuss what these words have in common.

—   After that we will tell you about the difference between them.

—   Let’s start our lesson.

If we take a vocabulary, we will see that the words “landscape”, “scenery” and “view” are translated as “пейзаж, вид”. It means that these words are very similar to each other, but they are not the same.

Let’s discuss the difference between these words.

The first word is “landscape”.

It’s a countable noun (usually singular).

The definition of this word is “a large area of countryside, usually one without many buildings or other things that aren’t natural”.

The noun “landscape” has a geographical connotation. We use this word to describe the structure of the land and its shape.

In other words, the noun “landscape” is used to talk about the view or a large expanse of a particular area and how it’s arranged or positioned.

We can also use this word to describe the area, which includes hills, mountains, valleys, etc.

There is also the term “urban landscape”. It’s used to talk about the same things but of an urban scene.

Let’s look at the following examples:

Stephanie, let’s take some pictures of the landscape of the Lake District.

Spain has a very varied landscape.

Or

When Robert arrived to Rome, he was fascinated by the beauty of its landscape.

The second word is “scenery”.

It’s an uncountable noun.

The definition of this word is “the general appearance of the natural environment, especially when it’s beautiful”.

The word “scenery” is a term, which has a much broader meaning than the word “landscape”. “Scenery” often refers to indoors settings.

We usually use the word “scenery” to describe what is on the land, for example, trees, bushes, grass, flowers, etc.

It’s necessary to use the noun “scenery” when we want to talk about the natural features of a particular area that we can see. In other words, we use this word to talk about natural beauty.

It’s almost impossible to hear “scenery” used in a negative context.

Look at the following examples:

The area has incredible scenery, gorgeous white sand beaches, rocky coasts and beautiful waterfalls.

The hot weather and the fabulous scenery began to work their magic and Phillis started to relax.

Or

The fourteen-mile coastline has splendid scenery.

The third word is “view”.

It’s a countable noun.

The definition of this word is “something what you can see from a particular place, or the ability to see from a particular place”.

Now let’s compare two examples:

1. What Megan sees out of the window is magnificent.

And

2. The view from Megan’s window is magnificent.

In the second example we used the word “view” to show that the girl sees something from a certain place. In our case, this place is the window.

Pay attention! Both these sentences are correct, but the second sentence sounds much better.

—   Guys, now you know what the words “landscape”, “scenery” and “view” have in common.
