— Hello, boys and girls! My name is Martin. This is James.
— And this is our Chinese friend Lee.
— Welcome to our lesson!
— The day before yesterday we were listening to the radio.
— One man called the people on the radio and they started talking.
— Listen to their conversation.
— This will help you to guess the topic of the lesson.
— Hello, Liam and Susan. My name is Nick.
— Hello, Nick. What are you going to tell us?
— But first, we must remind you that today we are talking about how to deal with people that irritate us.
— Yeah, I remember. I want to tell you about my boss.
— Oh, sounds interesting.
— No, not at all. He’s a really terrible person. He is angry and unfair.
— Ha-ha.
— Excuse me. Why are you laughing? It’s not funny.
— Oh, we are so sorry.
— It was a really strange situation.
— After the people on the radio laughed at the man, he hung up.
— In my opinion, it’s very unprofessional!
— They needed to encourage the man, but they laughed at him.
— They don’t deserve to work in this sphere.
— Yeah, I agree.
I think you understand that today in the lesson we will:
· discuss when people need the words of encouragement;
And
· talk about English phrases that we use to encourage a person or to calm him or her down.
As you know, we face with different problems every day. Our life is also full of unpleasant situations and disappointment. All these things can bring us down, make us feel terrible and sad. They can also make us angry or otherwise diffident.
The situations can be different.
For example:
a dismissal from job;
a conflict with colleague;
a quarrel with best friend;
a car accident;
a burglary;
a loss of something, etc.
— When such situations happen to people, we need to support them. And it’s not always easy to find the right words.
— That’s why today we are going to talk about the phrases, which we can use to encourage these people or to calm them down.
— Let’s start.
The 1st phrase is “don’t be afraid”.
The translation is “не надо бояться”.
For instance:
— Mark, why are you crying?
— Oh, Fred, I got a really bad mark today. My mum will be angry with me.
— Come on, Mark. Don’t be afraid. It’s just a mark.
— Yeah, you’re right. Thank you, Fred. You’re such a good friend!
The 2nd phrase is “you shouldn’t worry about it/ that”.
The translation is “тебе не следует беспокоиться об этом”.
For example:
— Cody, what did you want to tell me on the phone? I was in a hurry, so I couldn’t speak.
— Oh, dad. I don’t know how to say. I ate the last piece of cake. I completely forgot that uncle Frank is coming tonight.
— Oh, Cody, you shouldn’t worry about it.
— Why? It was a piece for him. I was just watching TV and…
— Cody, your mum has bought another cake. We will give uncle Frank a piece of this one.
— Whoo, what a relief!
The following phrase is “don’t worry your head about it”.
The translation is “не бери в голову”.
For instance:
— Carter, can you imagine? Julia told me yesterday that my articles are awful, and I need to write better.
— Really? I think your articles are the most interesting in our magazine.
— Thank you, Carter. I also find them interesting, but Julia said that I’m a really bad writer.
— Oh, don’t worry your head about it. She’s just jealous.
— You think so?
— Yes, Lucas!
— All right. I won’t pay attention to her anymore.
Let’s look at the 4th phrase. “Don’t bother about it/that”.
The translation is “не беспокойся об этом”.
Let’s look at the example:
— Victor, I don’t know what to do. I don’t have time to do chemistry.
— Oh, Kyle, don’t bother about it. We don’t have chemistry lesson tomorrow.
— Oh, right you are! How could I forget about it?
— Ha-ha. You’re so funny, Kyle.
The 5th phrase is “I’m sure you can cope with this”.
The translation is “я уверен, что ты с этим справишься”.
For instance:
— Noah, I have serious problems at work. I don’t know what to do. Everything is so awful.
— Oh, please, Robert. I’m sure you can cope with this.
— Well… I’m not sure about that. I think my boss wants to fire me.
— Don’t worry. He won’t fire you, because you’re a very good specialist.
— Oh, maybe you’re right. We’ll see.
The following phrase is “I assure you: everything will be fine”.
The translation is “я уверяю тебя, всё будет хорошо”.
Look at the example:
— Richard, my uncle has just got into a car accident. He will be taken to the nearest hospital.
— Oh my God! What’s his condition?
— Well, his leg is broken. I’m afraid he won’t be able to walk anymore.
— Christopher, I assure you: everything will be fine! You need to think positively.
— Oh, Richard. You are right, as usual!
The 7th phrase is “don’t take it to heart”.
The translation is “не принимай близко к сердцу”.
Let’s look at the example:
— Daddy, Leslie called me a silly boy yesterday! I hate her. I’m not silly.
— Patrick, she’s just a girl. Girls usually say bad words to boys to draw their attention. So, please, don’t take it to heart.
— Does it mean that she likes me?
— Well… I’m not sure, but I think yes.
— Oh, cool. Can we buy her some flowers? I want to present them to her.
— Sure. Let’s go.
Look at the following phrase “take it easy”.
The translation is “успокойся, расслабься”.
For instance:
— Oh, Colin, my guests are coming soon. I need to sweep the floor, wash the dishes, cook something delicious and take the rubbish out.
— Oh, please, stop! Just relax and take it easy.
— Colin, I can’t. I have only two hours to do all these things.
— Chase, I can help you if you want.
— Oh, really? That would be great! Thank you.
Let’s look at the following phrase “where there is life there is hope”.
The translation is “там, где есть жизнь, есть надежда”.
Look at the example:
— Hunter, my wife has just said that she wants to divorce me. I can’t lose her. She is the only woman I love.
— Oh, how awful! What did you do to Zoe? Did you offend her?
— No, she just said that she doesn’t love me anymore.
— Oh, I see. Well… First of all, you need to calm down!
— Hunter, I can’t! I just can’t.
— But you have to calm down and try to win her heart again!
— Do you think it’s possible?
— Of course, I do! Remember, where there is life there is hope!
— Oh, thank you. I’ll do my best to win her love again.
The 10th phrase is “I think you are overreacting”.
The translation is “я думаю, что ты преувеличиваешь”.
For example:
— Jason, what happened between you and Mr. Smith yesterday?
— Oh, we had a quarrel. He insulted me.
— Really? It’s unbelievable. What did he say to you?
— Can you imagine, Garvin? Mr. Smith told me that I’m a terrible housekeeper!
— That’s all?
— Yes! But in my opinion, it was very rude of him to say such awful things to me.
— Oh, Jason. I think you are overreacting. Just try to do your job better.
— What? Oh, you’re just like him. Get out!
And the last phrase is “calm down”.
The translation is “успокойся”.
Let’s look at the example:
— Justin, Justin, I need your help!
— Kevin, what happened? Why are you shouting?
— I was bitten by a snake. I will die in a few minutes.
— Ha-ha. Kevin, please, calm down.
— How can you ask me to calm down? I’m dying!
— Kevin, I saw that snake through the window. It was just a green snake. Their bites are not lethal.
— Does it mean that I’m not going to die?
— Yes, that’s right. You won’t die, Kevin. At least not today!
— Hooray! I need to call Amanda and tell her how much I love her.
— Guys, now you know what phrases you can use to encourage a person or to calm him or her down.
— Remember! Only a few words can change people’s lives, their mood or attitude to different situations.
— That’s all for today, boys and girls.
— We hope the lesson was interesting and useful for you.
— See you soon, our dear friends.
