Конспект урока "Tag questions"

Hello, guys! Welcome to our grammar lessons!

My best friends Maddie, Kristie and Martin will help me make our lessons useful and enjoyable.

Today we are going to look at Question tags in English.

By the end of this lesson you will have a good understanding of why to use question tags and how to build them.

So let’s get started.

Martin: I’m hungry!

Tommy: So am I. Let’s go to that new burger place, shall we?

Lucy: Great. I’m coming with you!

Tommy: We want to go alone, Lucy! Besides, you haven’t finished your homework yet, haven’t you?

Lucy: But Tommy…

Tommy: I said no!

Martin: Err…Tommy, I haven’t got much money left…

Tommy: Neither have I. Let me think … Lucy has!

Tommy: On second thoughts, I really can’t go and leave my little sister behind, can I?

Lucy: You’re not getting a penny out of me, Thomas Wilson!

First, let’s translate the highlighted sentences.

Let’s go to that new burger place, shall we? – Давай сходим в новое кафе, хорошо?

Besides, you haven’t finished your homework yet, haven’t you? Кстати, ты ещё не закончила домашнюю работу, верно?

On second thoughts, I really can’t go and leave my little sister behind, can I? – Я подумал и решил, что не могу оставить свою маленькую сестрёнку дома, так ведь?

As you see, question tags are short questions at the end of statements.

Question tags are mainly used in speech when we want to confirm that something is true or not and have the following meaning: «Прав ли я?», «Ты согласен со мной?».

Here are some more examples of Russian translations:

You usually start your work at 8 a.m., don’t you?

Ты обычно начинаешь работать в восемь, не так ли?

Nina can’t speak French, can she?

Нина не говорит по-французски, так ведь?

We are going to see our parents tomorrow, aren’t we?

Мы завтра собираемся навестить родителей, да?

You can always trust me, can’t you?

Ты всегда можешь мне доверять, хорошо?

You haven’t been to France, have you?

Ты никогда не был во Франции, я прав?

How do you make a Question tag?

Look through the sentences. What do they have in common? Work out the rule and complete the tables:

He is twelve years old, isn’t he?

I’m doing the best I can, aren’t I?

You have had dinner, haven’t you?

They have been walking, haven’t they?

We had finished by that time, hadn’t we?

She can’t play chess, can she?

Give me your pen, will you?

She doesn’t live in Pont Street, does she?

They didn’t give you a key, did they?

It wasn’t going fast, was it?

The man hadn’t left, had he?

She won’t answer the phone, will she?

We mustn’t leave now, must we?

Let’s not fight, shall we?

The basic structure of a tag question is:

If the sentence is positive, we use a negative question tag;

E.g. It’s a nice house, isn’t it?

If the sentence is negative, we use an positive question tag;

E.g. It isn’t a nice house, is it?

When there is a negative word in the sentence (never, rarely, seldom, hardly, barely and scarcely) the question tag is positive.

She’s never been to Italy, hasn’t she?

Question tags are formed with the auxiliary verb from the statement and a subject pronoun to replace the noun or noun phrase.

If the main verb is be or a modal verb, we repeat it in the question tag.

You are very excited, aren’t you?

The question tag for I’m is aren’t I?

I’m a good player, aren’t I?

With let’s, the tag question is shall we?

Let’s go to the beach, shall we?

Let’s have a coffee, shall we?

With an imperative, the tag question is will you?

Close the window, will you?

Hold this, will you?

When the subject is nothing, we use “it” in the tag question.

Nothing bad happened, did it?

Nothing ever happens, does it?

If the subject is nobody, somebody, everybody, no one, someone or everyone, we use “they” in the tag question.

Nobody asked for me, did they?

Nobody lives here, do they?

Pronunciation

If we don’t know the answer, it is a real question and we use a rising intonation with the tag question.

You don’t know where the boss is, do you?

If we know the answer and are just confirming the information a falling intonation is used with the tag question.

That film was fantastic, wasn’t it?

Now it’s time to practice the rule with Martin.

Complete the conversation. Use question tags.

Kristie: We don’t have any plans for today, do we? Shall we go to the park?

Maddie: Yes, let’s do that. Our friends will want to come, won’t they?

Kristie: Yes. Tommy and Lucy are at home with their mum and dad, aren’t they?

Maddie: But Tommy’s exam is tomorrow, isn’t it? He’s probably studying.

Kristie: Lucy doesn’t like staying at home on sunny days, does he? Let’s ask her to go with us, shall we?

Maddie: Yes, sure. It will be a great day, won’t it?

That`s all for today.

I hope, the information was useful to you, wasn’t it?
