“The” with the names of places (continents, countries, cities)

The” with the names of places (continents, countries, cities)"

Hello, guys! Welcome to our grammar lessons!

My best friends Maddy, Kristie and Martin will help me make our lessons useful and enjoyable.

We are off on holiday soon. So can you help us build the map so we know where to go? You will also have a good chance to revise the usage of definite article “the” with geographical names. Come on, then. Let’s go!

Continents are very large landmasses found on Earth. The Earth has seven such continents. Let’s start form the largest in size to the smallest.

Do you know where Asia is?

Asia – Asia is the world’s largest and most populated continent on Earth. It covers 30% of the Earth’s land area. Asia hosts about 60% of the world’s current human population. It also has impressive geographical features. It has the Earth’s lowest point – the Dead Sea. Asia also includes some of the world’s hottest, driest, wettest and coldest places.

Where is Africa?

Africa - Africa is the second-largest and also the second most populated continent in the world, after Asia. The continent of Africa covers 20.4% of the world’s total land area. Africa has a population of 1 billion which accounts for about 14.72% of the world’s human population.

Where is the third largest continent – North America situated?

Where is Antarctica?

Antarctica - Antarctica is the fifth largest continent in area. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice that is about 1.6 kilometers in thickness. It is the coldest, driest and windiest continent. There are no permanent human population on this island, but only a few thousands of people, who live here at the research stations found across the continent.

Where is Europe?

Europe – Europe is one of the world’s seven continents divided from Asia by the Ural Mountains. It is the world’s second-smallest continent. It covers about 6.8% of the Earth’s surface area. Nevertheless, Europe is the third most populated continent of the world.

Do you know where Australia is?

Australia - Australia is the smallest continent on Earth. Australia is also referred to as the biggest island.

Now look at our map. Do we use any articles with the names of continents?

No, we don’t. We don’t normally use “the” with the names of continents.

What countries make up the continents of the world?

Bingo! It’s Egypt. The current capital of Egypt is Cairo.

What is the biggest country on this continent? It is best known for: carnival in Rio, football and the Amazon rainforests.

That’s Brazil! The capital of Brazil is Brasilia.

There are 2 big countries in North America. Everybody knows them. They are …. of course, Canada and The United States of America.

Ottawa is the capital of Canada. Which of these cities is the capital of the USA: Washington D.C. or New York? Correct answer is Washington D.C.

Have a look at the names of the countries. Do we use them with definite article “the”? No, we don’t. We don’t normally use “the” with the names of countries.

But there are some exceptions.

We have to use ‘the’ with the following names: The Netherlands, the Sudan; and if a name of a country includes one of the following words: Republic, Federation, State, Kingdom. For example: The Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, The People's Republic of China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Look through the capitals of the countries.

And again, we usually use the names of cities with NO article: London, Moscow, Paris, Milan and etc.

And compare: London – the city of London; Moscow – the city of Moscow, Paris – the city of Paris. We use “the” with the word “city”.

Quiz time. Fill in ‘the’ where necessary.

1. Is ___ Rio de Janeiro the capital of ___ Brazil?

Correct answer is b) No. We don’t use “the” before cities and countries.

2. Where is the Sahara Desert?

Correct answer is a) In ___ Africa. We don’t use “the” with continents.

3. Where is the Mississippi River?

Correct answer is b) In the USA. We have to use ‘the’, because the name of a country includes the word – States.

4. What is the capital of __ Italy?

Correct answer is a) the city of Rome. We use “the” before the word “city”.

5. Is Lake Baikal in the Russian Federation the deepest lake in the world?

Correct answer is b) Yes. We have to use ‘the’, because the name of a country includes the word – Federation.

That`s all for today.
