Maddie: Hello!
Tommy: Hi. It’s Tommy. Where are you?
Maddie: I’ll be in a minute. I’ve lost my mobile phone and couldn’t find it anywhere. I couldn’t leave home without it, you know…
Tommy: Maddie, hurry up! We need to start the lesson.
Hi guys,
This is Tommy again. Mobile phones became a vital part of our daily lives and it is difficult to imagine how people lived without mobile phones in the past.
And today we’re going to learn most common phone phrases and to name phone numbers in English.
First let’s learn some essential telephone vocabulary.
There are different types of phones:

· cell phones or mobile phones (a cell phone with more advanced capabilities is called a smartphone);
· pay phones or public phones:
The red telephone box, a telephone kiosk for a public telephone designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott is one of the symbols of the United Kingdom. The red colour was chosen to make them easy to spot.
In 1990s they were replaced by modern boxes, but you still can see them in many parts of London.
· the regular telephone you have in your house is called a landline;
· this type of phone is called a cordless phone because it is not connected by a cord.
When someone calls you, the phone makes a sound (…) – we say the phone is ringing.

If you’re available (доступен), you pick up the telephone or answer the telephone, in order to talk to the person.
If there’s nobody to answer the phone, then later, you can call back.
When you want to make a phone call, you start by dialing the number.
Finally, when you’re finished with the conversation, you hang up the receiver.

“It’s Simon” and “My name’s Simon”. – Why did the speaker use different words?
In the second dialogue Simon is introducing himself. They do not know each other.
But in the first call they do know each other, they can be friends.

Listen to the phone call again and fill in the gaps in your worksheets with the phrases you hear.
Rearrange the words into the key phrases.

1. It’s Simon 2. Hold on a moment. 3. I’ll get him for you. 4. Can I speak to Mrs Sharp? 5. Can you tell him to call me back? 6. Thank you but I’m not interested. |
This is the same phone call cut up. Put the phrases in the correct order.
Are you ready to check?

Oh, hi Simon. Hold on a moment. I’ll get him for you.
Sorry Simon. He’s not here. I think he went out. Can I take a message?
Can I speak to Dan, please?

- Hello. Is it 2335147? - I think you have the wrong number. - Oh, Sorry about that. Bye. - No problem. Bye. |
What phrase did Tommy use to deal with the situation? – I think you have the wrong number. – Думаю, Вы ошиблись номером.
In English they normally give telephone numbers by saying each individual number in it:
E.g. Our phone number is two six three, three eight four seven. (263-3847)
When there is a zero (0) in their telephone number, they often say O like the name of the letter O.
E.g. 505-1023 = five-O-five, one-O-two-three.
If a phone number contains two of the same numbers together, they usually say double (number).
E.g. 233-5147 = two double three, five one four seven.
If a phone number contains three of the same numbers together, we usually say triple (number).
E.g. (212-8555) two one two, eight triple five.
Now I will offer you to role play some telephone calls. You will have to work in pairs.
Look through the following situations.
1. You want to speak to Mark. You are sure that this is his number.
You think you dialed 020 7793 5132.
2. You are calling your friend. He is not at home. You want to leave a message to say that you won’t be able to go to the gym after school tomorrow.
3. You are calling from a local Fitness Club. You want to offer free trial classes.
For making you telephone calls look more real, you may sit back-to-back or use telephones (if possible or appropriate).
Maddie: Hello everyone!
Tommy: Hi, Maddie, you’re almost in time!!! We’ve just finished.
Maddie: Oh, I’m really sorry for that.
