T : Good afternoon! Sit down please.
What date is it today?
P: Today is 22 of April.
T: Dear students, look at these amazing landscapes. The world we live in is really wonderful: blue oceans, seas, rivers, snow - capped mountains, valleys and fields with aromatic and fragrant fl owers. We all live surrounded by this beauty. But, can you imagine that there might come a day when all this beauty will disappear? Of course, you can’t. However, nature faces a great threat. That is why people who are concerned about our planet (eco - warriors) have established the 22nd of April as a special day around the world – Earth Day. It is the day when people learn what they can do to protect the planet. So, at our lesson today we are going to discuss global ecological problems. We should answer two main questions during our lesson:
1. Is the situation really so dangerous?
2. What can we do to protect nature and to save our
planet?
I asked you to be ready to discuss problems.
T: Here are some words on the blackboard, look at them and give their definitions in English.
Ecology
P1: Study of plants and living things in relation to their environment.
Environment
P2: All the surroundings of an organism, including other living things, climate, air, water and soil.
Acid rain
P3: When harmful gases from cars and factories released into the air fall back to the Earth with rain or snow.
Rainforests
P4: Evergreen woodlands that receive at least 100 inches of rain a year, home to more than half of the world’s plants and animals.
Habitat
P5: An area that provides animals and plants with food, water, shelter.
And now we shall do an ex. Please, fill in the gaps with words derived from the words in brackets. 2Min
There are many problems which (1) _threaten_ our natural environment. Acid rain, (2) _global_ warming and air and water (3) __pollution__are among the most serious ones. There are several ways to help improve the situation. Firstly, we should encourage (4) _recycling_
Because it is the (5) _production of new materials which causes the most damage. We must learn to refuse things like plastic bags and glass jars. Secondly, driving an environmentally - friendly car is also (6) helpful_.
Furthermore, joining an (7) _organization which plants trees or cleans up beaches would be a (8 ) _proof that you are really (9) __concerned__about the environment. Lastly, supporting groups such as Greenpeace, which try to prevent many (10) _environmental disasters, would help to ensure that our planet will be clean and safe for the future generations.
T : And now let's read this text.
What do you think of environmental groups like Greenpeace? What other environmental organizations do you know?
Greenpeace
Founded in 1971, Greenpeace campaigns to stop climate change, protect ancient forests, save the oceans, stop whaling, stop the nuclear threat, eliminate toxic chemicals, encourage sustainable trade and say no to genetic engineering.
Friends of the Earth International
Federation of all Friends of the Earth groups around the world. The organisation campaigns on the most urgent environmental and social issues of our day, while simultaneously catalyzing a shift toward sustainable societies.
People & Planet
In the UK a network of groups of students, Sixth - formers and other supporters who campaign on issues of world poverty, human rights and protecting the environment.
Earth Day Network
Its mission is to broaden the environmental movement worldwide and to educate and mobilize people, governments, and corporations to take responsibility for a clean and healthy environment.
Worldwide Fund for Nature
Founded in 1961, WWF has works to conserve nature and ecological processes. It focuses on six areas, Marine, Freshwater, Species, Climate Change, Toxics, Ecoregions and Forests.
The Sierra Club
United States and Canada organisation that offers opportunities for local involvement, activism and outings. Current priority campaigns are Sprawl Solutions, Protecting Wildlands, Forests and Logging, Water and Factory Farm Pollution, Global Warming, Human Rights, Population Stabilization and Responsible Trade.
National Audubon Society
Founded in 1905, the National Audubon Society is named for John James Audubon (1785–1851). Its mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and other wildlife for the benefi t of humanity and the earth’s biological diversity. The site has many resources and campaigns including a forest desktop activist guide.
Green Cross International
Founded by Mikhail Gorbachev in 1993, Green Cross works to ensure a just, sustainable and secure future for all by fostering a value shift and cultivating a new sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility in humanity’s relationship with nature.
World Environmental Organization
Devoted to the preservation of the natural diversity of plant and animal species, and their habitats, through the prevention of environmental degradation and destruction. World. Org develops and implements scientific strategies for decreasing fossil fuel use, preventing climate change, and preserving plant and animal species and their habitats.
T: Why do people so often speak about ecology nowadays?
P : Because it’s one of the most important sciences in the
modern world.
T: As you know pollution is a threat to our environment.
Watch the following video which I believe will help us
in our work and in our discussion. and express your opinion. 6 min
(United Nations Conference on environment and development Rio de Janero (June 1992) ECO – Severn Suzuky 12 years old)
1. Do you think international meetings on the environment are useful?
2. How has the world changed since you were a child? (technology, environment, health)
3. Do you think leaders around the world have done enough to address the environmental problems?
4. Do people live in greater harmony with the environment today?
P1: I don’t think so. The range of environmental problems is rather wide nowadays.
5. What is the most important problems?
the growth of pollution in it’s many forms (air pollution, water pollution, land pollution);
shortage of natural resources;
destruction of wildlife;
the growth of population;
traffic noise;
acid rains;
the greenhouse effect;
depletion of the ozone layer
radiation;
deforestation and desertification;
health and chemical safety;
global warming.
T: I agree with you. What do you know about it? What makes environmental problems?
P1: Every year, world industry pollutes the earth’s atmosphere with about 100 million tons of dust and other harmful substances. As a result, some rare species of animals, birds, fi sh and plants disappear forever, and a number of rivers and lakes dry up.
P2: We human beings take from nature as much as we can. We cut down forests and build farms, houses, roads on the land. While doing that, we pollute the environment. Cars and factories, plants and power stations also pollute the air and make it dangerous to breathe.
P3: Even scientifi c progress has caused global disasters on our beautiful planet. Especially modern industrial production is the main threat to nature. There are a variety of problems that are affecting the world today, including air pollution, acid rain, water pollution, and smog, etc. Toxins and smog from industrial areas and vehicles have fi lled the air that we breathe into our lungs and often
make us ill.
P4: Nuclear radiation has become a serious problem, too. The most horrible ecological disaster befell Belarus and its people after the Chernobyl tragedy in 1986. About 18 percent of the territory of Belarus was horribly polluted with radioactive substances. It was a tragedy.
T: How does pollution affect our health?
P: The situation is very serious, with one of fi ve people dying
yearly as a result of issues brought about by pollution.
Compared with years that have passed, environmental
pollution has largely increased.
Do you think the planet has been permanently damage?
Will the problems get worse or will they slowly disappear?
Is it better if we all went back to nature (left the cities and moved to the countryside)?
Which countries cause the most pollution?
What is your opinion on climate change?
Will the climate keep changing or go back to normal?
Have you seen any changes in the weather or climate in our country? If so, what are they?
What problems are being caused by the destruction of rainforests?
Are zoos a good or bad idea?
The famous marine biologist Jacques Cousteau said: “Water and air…have become global garbage
cans. ” What do you think of his words?
What could happen if we don’t learn to use the environment carefully and protect it from damage caused by man’s activities?
Very soon we’ll have no healthy world to live in.
The world is our home and we want to see it clean and beautiful. Our land is full of beautiful fl owers, plants, and trees which grow and blossom in the meadows, in the forests and in our gardens. Our Earth is so beautiful!
What steps can be taken to correct ecological problems? Have you compiled some rules to follow?
I give you a minute to think about it.
