With an area of 603,628square kilometers, Ukraine is the second largest contiguous country on the European continent.
Ukraine claims to be home of the geographical center of Europe, which is near the western town of Rakhiv. Other places in Europe claim to have the center, and the definition depends on the methodology used.
The population of Ukraine is 47 million.

More than half (53 percent) of the population speaks Ukrainian and 44 percent Russian.

The climate of Ukraine is mostly temperate continental. A subtropical Mediterranean climate is prevalent on the southern portions of the Crimean Peninsula. The average monthly temperature in winter ranges from -8° to 2° C (17.6° to 35.6° F), while summer temperatures average 17° to 25° C (62.6° to 77° F).
Bleak Sea is the largest sea in Ukraine. It washes Ukraine on the south. The Black Sea is the only natural boundary of Ukraine. It also links Ukraine with the world. Since ancient times economic, political, and cultural influences from the south have reached Ukraine via the Black Sea.
The Sea of Azov, a northern extension of the Black Sea, is located on the southern coastlines of Russia and Ukraine.
The largest river in Ukraine and the third largest in Europe. Its length is 2,285 km, of which 485 km lie within the Russian Federation, 595 km within Belarus, and 1,095 km within Ukraine. The Dnieper Basin covers 504,000 sq km, of which 289,000 sq km are within Ukraine.
Dniester is the second largest river in Ukraine, with the length of 1352 km within Ukraine, starts from the Carpathian Mountains.
The Carpathian mountains dominate the region with their forests, rivers, lakes, alpine meadows, towns and villages. The region is rich in culture, activity and history.
In the south of Ukraine it is Crimean Mountains. Its area is 27 000 square kilometers. It is washed by the Black Sea and the See of Northern part of Crimea is flat (so called Steppe Crimea), southern part is covered by Crimean mountains (so called Mountainous Crimea).Azov. The highest mountain here is Roman-Kosh a height of 5,069 feet (1,545 m).
The Constitution states that the national symbols of Ukraine shall be the National Flag, the National Emblem and the National Anthem.
Ukrainian President is Viktor Yanykowych.

Ukrainians are the fifth most-drinking nation in the world. Only Moldavians, Russians, Hungarians and Czechs are ahead of them. An average Ukrainian older than 15 drinks 15.6 liters of alcohol a year (it’s a liter more than an Irishman and almost two liters more than a Norwegian).
The monuments to a famous Ukrainian poet, Taras Shevchenko, are set in 1200 places around the world. However, most of them are located in western Ukraine.
The first university in Eastern Europe (1576)
The National University of Ostroh Academy is the successor of Ostroh Slavic, Greek and Latin Academy, the first higher educational establishment of the Eastern Slavs. It was founded in 1576 by Prince Vasyl-Kostiantyn of Ostroh.
Ukraine is a 4th educated nation in the world: 99.4% of Ukrainians aged 15 and over can read and write. 70% of adult Ukrainians have a secondary or higher education. Ukraine has about 150 colleges and universities, of which the most important are at Kiev, Lviv, and Kharkiv. There are about 70,000 scholars in 80 research institutes. The current heavyweight boxing champions of the world, Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko from Ukraine, have doctorate degrees.
Ukrainian language took the second place on melodic criteria after Italian and it was ranked as the third most beautiful language in the world on such criteria as phonetics, vocabulary, phraseology and sentence structure after French and Persian at a linguistic contest held in Paris in 1934.
The deepest in the world subway (metro) station is located in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv (Kiev)! It is Arsenal’na metro station (red line) and its depth is 105 meters!

The name "Ukraine" is derived from the word "krai" which means border.
The territory known as Ukraine only had only brief periods of independence before 1991.
Ukrainian customs are
heavily influenced by
Christianity, which is the
dominant religion in the
country. Gender roles
also tend to be more
traditional, and
grandparents play a
greater role in raising
children than in the West.
The culture of Ukraine has been also influenced by its eastern and western neighbours, which is reflected in its architecture, music and art.
Bread is consumed with every meal in most Ukrainian families. Some even eat bread with dessert and fruit.
