II. Работа учащихся в группах. Чтение текстов о главных аэропортах Лондона.
- Do you want to go to England? Let’s go there by plane! Of course, the plane is the fastest means of communication and there are three main airports in England. You should know some information about them. Let’s divide into three groups and read 3 short texts about them.
The1st- about Heathrow, the 2nd -about Gatwick, the 3d –about Stansted.
HEATHROW
Heathrow is London’s main airport. It opened in 1929 as a small base for flight test, and became an international airport in 1946.
Over 40 million people pass through Heathrow each year. More than 53000 people work at Heathrow airport. There are 14 dogs which can smell drugs. There are four terminals. From them you can fly direct to 85 countries. Heathrow is in the south-west underground rail link which takes an hour to reach central London. Тhere are many robberies from passengers’ luggage at the airport, and it sometimes called ‘ Thiefrow’
GATWICK
Gatwick is London’s second airport after Heathrow. It is about 25 miles south of London. Gatwick opened in 1930. It has two terminals. Twenty-one million passengers pass through the airport every year, and in summer about 700 flights land every day.
STANSTED
Stansted is London’s third airport. It is 30 miles north of London. It opened in 1942 as a base for the American Air Force during the second World War. In 1966 Stansted became a passenger airport and its first terminal opened in 1969. It takes over 1 million passengers a year, many of them holiday-makers. A second terminal opened in 1991 and Stansted can now handle 8 million passengers a year, many of whom are people who can not go through London’s two other airports, Gatwick and Heathrow.
III. Now answer the teacher’s questions please:
Which is the largest airport in England?
How many people pass through Heathrow every year?
How many people work there?
How many dogs smell drugs there?
How many terminals are there?
What airport is the second one?
Where is it?
How many passengers pass through it every year?
What is the name of London’s third airport?
How many passengers does the airport take every year?
IV. Now look at the blackboard and read this rhyme:
If you go to the left, you’re sure to go right,
If you go to the right, you go wrong.
(Why is it so?) ( different pupils’ opinions)
-Yes, the traffic keeps to the left, and not to the right, as in Europeans countries. –Now listen to the story about traffic in the streets of London.
Most of London buses are red double-deckers. There are also green one- storey buses, which go from London to the countryside. Brown buses belong to British railways. Be careful when you cross the street in London because the traffic keeps to the left and not to the right as in many European countries. When you cross the street ,look first to the right and then to the left. The traffic lights here are not like in Europe. The red says ‘ stop’, the green says ‘wait’, and the yellow says ‘ cross’.
V. Are these statements true or false?
TRUE or FALSE:
1.Double- deckers are green in England.
2.Brown buses belong to British railways.
3.One storey green buses run from London to the countryside.
4.Traffic keeps to the right in England.
5.The green light says ‘‘ wait’’, the yellow light says‘‘ cross”, the red light says ‘‘ stop” in London.
VI. Mark and Brandon (from America) are talking about their holidays. Put their conversation in the right order:
Hello, Mark! How were your holidays?
Fantastic! You also had a lot of fun there!
Oh! Great, thanks! My family and I spent a month in London. It was really nice there. We saw Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, which stands on the Themes near Westminster Abbey. We visited the British Museum, the Tate Gallery, the National Theatre, went to a concert at the Royal Albert Hall and Buckingham Palace.
By the way, where have you been?
This summer I spent two weeks with my brother in Oxford. The weather , people, everything was wonderful. We visited one of the oldest Universities in the world there.
VII Подведение итогов урока. Домашнее задание. ( Make up your own story ‘ My last travelling’).
