II Main Part
1) Meet Great Britain.
Let’s speak about this country. This is a map of Great Britain.
- There are two big islands in the British Isles - Britain and Ireland.
There are two countries in Ireland. Northern Ireland is in the north and the Republic of Ireland is in the south. There are three countries in Britain. They are Scotland, Wales and England. Scotland is in the north. England is south of Scotland and Wales is west of England. Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England are all countries in the United Kingdom.
- London is the caputal of England. Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland. Cardiff is the capital of Wales. Belfast is the capital of Northen Ireland.
- Each part of the UK has its own flag and symbol. For example, a rose is a symbol of England. English live there. A thistle is a symbol of Scotland where Scots live. A daffodil is a symbol of Wales where Welsh live. A shamrock is a symbol of Northern Ireland where Irish live. Britain is a monarchy. Queen Elizabeth is the head of the state since 1952.
- The capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is London.
2) Getting around London.
- Let’s start our travelling. What do you think of a ride through London on the top of a double - decker?
- A good idea! It is the best way of seeing the streets and the people.
- London is a very beautiful city with a lot of sights - among them is Westminster Abbey. I think it is one of the most beautiful and famous churches in London. There are many monuments and statues there. It is very old. It is more than 900 years old. I know Westminster Abbey is famous for Poet's Corner too. Many great writers are buried there: Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling. The Abbey with its two tall towers is really very wonderful.
- The Tower of London was a fortress, a palace, a prison and the King's Zoo. Now it is a museum. You can see a lot of interesting things in the halls of the white Tower. Its square walls are white and very tall. W. the Conqueror built it in the 11th century. There are always black ravens in the Tower of London. People keep them and look after them very well as they believe that London will be rich while ravens live there.
- Speaking about Buckingham Palace there is no doubt it is a wonderful building with a monument in front of which is the Queen Victoria Memorial. Buckingham Palace is a place of Royal family. By the way, there are 600 hundred rooms there. More than 300 people work there.
- Big Ben is the large clock in one of the towers of the Houses of Parliament. Big Ben is the name of the clock and the bell. It's interesting to know that they got their names after Sir Benjamin Hall. He was a tall man, whose nickname was Big Ben.
- Piccadilly Circus is called a circus because it is round not square like other places. Piccadilly Circus is the heart of London's world. Piccadilly Circus got its name after the house which belonged to a tailor in the 17th century. He made the high collars known as "picadelles". The tailor's name was Higgens. He built the house which he called Picca - dilla Hall. In the center of the Circus there is a statue of Eros (the Greek God of Love) on the top of it. There is an underground station near Picadilly Circus. Piccadilly Circus looks pretty at night.
- It is necessary to say that in the centre of London is Trafalgar Square. Some people say it is the most beautiful place in London. In the middle of the Square stands a tall column. It is a monument to Admiral Nelson. Four bronze lions look at the square from the monument. There are two beautiful fountains in the square. They are in front of the National Gallery which is one of the best picture galleries of the world.
- St. Paul's Cathedral is one of the greatest English churches. I know that the famous English architect Sir Christopher Wren built it in the 17th century after the Great Fire. It took him 35 years. It is a beautiful building with many columns and towers. In one of its towers there is one of the largest bells in the world. As for me I would like to visit London and to see this beautiful church.
- You can have the best bird’s eye view of the capital from London Eye. The wheel is 135 metres high. It provides panoramic views over River Thames, Big Ben, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Trafalgar Square and even the countryside around the city. London Eye is a symbol of time and regenaration.
3) Now, we are at the Heathrow airport. We are ready to go home.
