Past Continuous
-We use the Past Continuous to describe:
an action in progress at a specific time in the past
an action in progress when another action interrupted it
two actions that were happening at the same time
- Прошедшее длительное время употребляется:
для описания действия, которое происходило в прошлом в определенное время
для описания действия, которое происходило в прошлом и было прервано другим действием
для описания двух или более одновременных действий, происходивших в развитии в прошлом
Forming/образование
- Consists of 2 parts (состоит из двух частей):
- was/were + Verb(ing)
Past Continuous
For example/примеры:
He was reading a book from six to seven o’clock yesterday (an action in progress-действие в процессе)
He was reading a book when I came in (another action interrupted it-прервано другим действием)
He was reading while we were playing (two actions-два одновременных действия)
Отрицательная форма(-)/Negative form
Вопросительная форма(?)/Interrogative form
- We use was/were before subject (was/were ставится перед подлежащим )
We don’t use Past Continuous with the following verbs (глаголы, которые не употребляются в Past Continuous ):

Time expressions/ указатели времени
- Now - сейчас
- While – в то время как(пока)
- When - когда
- Whole (day/evening…) – целый (день/вечер…)
- All morning/evening/day/week … - весь/всё/ всю (утро/вечер/день/неделю…)
- At 8 o’clock/10 o’clock … - в 8 часов/10 часов …
- At that moment – в тот момент
- Если глагол оканчивается –e-, то при прибавлении -ing-, она отбрасывается: take-taking, give-giving
- Конечная согласная при прибавлении -ing- удваивается, если перед ней стоит ударная гласная в закрытом слоге: cut-cutting, begin-beginning
- Конечная -l- удваивается: travel-travelling
- -ie- меняется на -y-: die-dying, tie-tying
