Bran Castle

• Since ancient times some legends about bloodsucking monsters have come to us. The character of the bloodthirsty count appeared much later. It all began in the late nineteenth century, when Irish writer Bram Stoker released his famous book "Dracula". In this work Count Dracula first appeared, who later became the most popular cinematic and literary image of the vampire. The name "Dracula" was borrowed from the real living man — Vlad III Dracula (Vlad the Impaler), known for its crazy bloodthirsty medieval reign of Wallachia (a region of today's Romania).

• While working on the novel, Bram Stoker, thoroughly studied the history and folklore of Transylvania and took a book from the library about rulers of Wallachia and Moldavia. The writer collected the data about Vlad Dracula. In Stoker's book, Count Dracula lived in a castle near the Borgo gorge in Transylvania. The residence of the real person, Vlad Tepes, which became the prototype of the Count, was in Targoviste, capital of Wallachia.

Why book vampire lived in Transylvania?

Possibly, Stoker in one of the studied books came across the legend that Vlad Tepes often spent the night in Bran castle during his campaigns, and the area around it was the favorite hunting ground of Prince Dracula. The Bran castle is in Transylvania, not far from the gorge, but the gorge has a ifferent name than the middle of Borgo. That is why the Bran castle is called Dracula's Castle, though the property never actually belonged to the infamous Vlad Tepes. This name was given only in the XX century, after the phenomenal success of "Dracula", when fans of stories about vampires went in search of a legendary Castle and came to the conclusion that Bran castle is the prototype of the sinister monster...

• At a time when the castles in the Loire Valley just beginning to build, the castle Alkaz from Toledo was almost ready, in 1377 the inhabitants of Brasov, under the leadership of Louis I de Anjou, began the construction of bran Castle (Bran Castle ) to strengthen the "gates of Empire" . You can't visit Romania and visit the bran castle which is the hallmark of this country. The existence of the castle is attributed most often to the story of count Dracula, Indeed, a castle of the XIV century in the village of bran, as if created for the film about count Dracula, a narrow and dizzying corridors of the castle, dark rooms, creaky wooden stairs, mazes...

• The real Dracula,Vlad Tepes (the Impaler), was the Prince of Wallachia, who led the Romanian resistance against the Turkish invasion in the fifteenth century.. Bran castle was built to protect the road corridor bran-Rucar – the important commercial road between Wallachia and Transylvania, and which linked the West Europe with the East and the North with the South. The place of the castle construction was chosen in the rocks and the castle had a clear view of the border. A newly built castle became a part of the Hungarian crown.

• Although originally built with a defensive purpose to protect the territory, the main role of the Bran castle was a commercial. It acted as a customs point on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia. This custom was of the European importance, and the merchants who passed through it, paid the tax 3% of value of goods.

• In the fortress of Bran there were military garrison made up of 24 soldiers. They were brought to the Ministry about the situation of calm on the border to Brasov (30 km distance). In the XIX century the military importance of the castle disappeared because of the acquisition of other ways to fight and upgrade weapons. At the same time, the custom moved to another area, and the economic importance of the Bran castle was lost.

• In December 1920 was the year when brestovci gave the castle to the Queen Mary in gratitude for her participation in the unification of the Romanian provinces in 1918. That year the castle was the private property of the Royal family. Bran turned into a summer residence of Maria, the second Queen of Romania. During 1920-1927 the castle was restored under the leadership of the Czech architect Karel Liman. The castle turned into a lovely residence surrounded by a Park, walkways and paths, with a lake, fountains, and terraces. There are some places of particular interest in the castle: the Old Chapel, the hidden staircase, the music room of the Queen Mary, the gunpowder tower, the apartment of king Ferdinand, the well in the yard .
