The first name of our city is Stavropol that was chosen by the founder Russian statesman, scientist and historian Vasiliy Nikitich Tatischev (1686-1750) in 1737. Tatischev chose the place for the fortress in the capital of baptized Kalmyks.

Stavropol was changed into Stavropol-on the-Volga because in 1777 in the Caucus the other city was named as Stavropol .

• All citizens had to leave their homes and native places where they were born and moved to other places which were called Portposelok and poselok Shlyuzovoy. And in spring of 1953 all town went under the water.

In 1964 Stavropol-on the-Volga was changed into Togliatti for the third time thanks to the city workers. That year a leader of Italian Communists Palmeiro Togliatti passed away.

In the second part of the 60-s a lot of people from all ex-republic of the USSR moved to Togliatti to build the Volga Automobile Plant. On the 19-th of April in 1970 the first car “Zhiguli”- the legendary Kopeika-was produced.

Now many people associate Togliatti with

the Volga Automobile Plant.

Today Togliatti is a dynamic industrial, multinational city with diversity of educational institutions and cultural places.
