When do we use the Present Continuous Tense?

We use the Present Continuous Tense when we talk about the actions which are happening now.

For example:

The baby is crying at this moment.

Малышка плачет в данный момент.

Or

Jack is playing with his toy now.

Джек играет со своей игрушкой сейчас.

You also need to know that in the Present Continuous Tense we can use the following time markers:

·      Now

And

·      At this moment

“Now” is translated as “сейчас”.

“At this moment” is translated as “в данный момент”.

Now let’s answer the question:

How do we form sentences in the Present Continuous Tense?

To form positive sentences we need to put the subject in the first place.

For example:

I

He, she, it

We, you, they

Then we need to use one of the forms of the verb “to be”: am, is or are.

After that we have to put the main verb with the ending -ing.

Look at the examples:

I am listening to the radio.

Я слушаю радио.

She is reading a newspaper.

Она читает газету.

They are watching TV now.

Они смотрят телевизор сейчас.

To form negative sentences we need to put the subject in the first place.

For example:

Then we need to use am, is or are with the particle “not”. After that we need to use the main verb with the ending -ing.

Look at the examples:

I am not listening to the radio. (or I’m not listening to the radio.)

She is not reading a newspaper. (or She isn’t reading a newspaper.)

They are not watching TV now. (or They aren’t watching TV now.)

To form questions we need to put am, is or are in the first place. After that we need to use the subject.
