And first, let’s talk about the modal verb “can”.

This modal verb is translated as “мочь, уметь”.

Now let’s answer the question:

When do we use the modal verb “can”?

Когда мы используем модальный глагол “can”?

We use it when we want to ask for or give permission.

Мы используем его, когда хотим попросить или дать разрешение.

For example:

William, can I take your car, please?

Уильям, можно мне взять твою машину, пожалуйста?

This verb is also used when we want to talk about the ability to do something.

Этот глагол также используется, когда мы хотим поговорить про способность что-либо делать.

For example:

Stephanie can play the piano very well.

Стэфани очень хорошо умеет играть на пианино.

Negative sentences

We put the subject in the first place.

Then we put the modal verb “can” with the particle “not”.

“Not” is translated as “не”.

The short form is “can’t”.

After that we need to use the main verb.

Мэдисон и Алексис не умеют танцевать.
