·        Fedya: Finally I can relax and have a cup of coffee.

·        Indira: What would you like?

·        Fedya: I`d like to have a cup of decaf coffee, please. Мне, пожалуйста чашечку кофе без кофеина.

·        Indira: And would you like some ice-cream?

·        Fedya: Some ice-cream? Sounds great. … (leaving.) Stop. As far as I remember, the word ‘some’ isn`t used in negative and interrogative sentences. насколько я помню, слово ‘some’ - немного, несколько не употребляется в отрицательных и вопросительных предложениях.  I`d better ask the girl why she uses ‘some’ in questions.  … I`m sorry, miss. ·        Fedya: Why did you use ‘some’ in the following sentence: Would you like some ice-cream?’ We   don`t use some in questions, do we?

First of all let`s revise when we use some and any. Для начала, вспомним, когда же нам нужны слова some и any, которые переводятся немного, несколько.

Look at the examples and revise: We`ve got some ice-cream but we haven`t got any milk for a milkshake.

Fedya: I was right. Look: We`ve got some ice-cream - у нас есть немного мороженого. It`s an affirmative sentence. Это утвердительное предложение. And we use some: some ice-cream. But we haven`t got any milk for a milkshake. Но у нас совсем нет молока для коктейля. It`s a negative sentence and here we use ‘any’. Это отрицательное предложение, и мы употребляем слово ‘any’ haven`t got any milk. Just as I`ve told you. Точь в точь, как я вам и сказал.

Indira: Yes, you are right. Some and any have the same meaning but differ by their usage. Ты прав. У Some и аny - одинаковое значение ‘немного, несколько, сколько-нибудь’, но они отличаются своим употреблением. Some is used in affirmative sentences, any in negative and interrogative. Some употребляется в утвердительных предложениях, а any - в отрицательных и вопросительных. Have you got any syrup left? Осталось ли немного сиропа?

But if I suggest something or vice versa ask for something I use some in such kinds of questions. Look: Would you like some ice-cream? Хотели бы вы немного мороженого? It`s an offer. - Это предложение. Or: Can I have some ice-cream, please. Можно мне немного мороженого? It`s a request. - это просьба. That`s why I asked you: “Would you like some ice-cream?” it`s an offer. Это предложение.

Fedya: Now I see. Some and any have the same meaning and they are translated - немного, несколько. We use some in affirmative sentences, any in negative and interrogative ones. Мы используем some в утвердительных предложениях,  any -  в отрицательных и вопросительных. But if a question has the meaning of an offer or request, we have to use some instead of any! Но если у вопроса значение просьбы или предложения, мы должны использовать some вместо  any.

Fedya: And the task is: Look at the picture, read the sentences and complete them with ‘some’ or ‘any’.

Are there (any) biscuits left? - No there aren`t (any). But there are (some) waffles, if you like. The first sentence is a question. Осталось ли печенье? It`s not an offer and not a request, so we need ‘any’ as it`s a common case. Это не предложение и не просьба, поэтому, нам нужно слово ‘any’, так как это общий случай.

No, there aren`t … This is a negative sentence and we definitely need ‘any’ in it. Нет не осталось… Это отрицательное предложение и нам определенно нужно слово ‘any’. No, there aren`t any. Нет, нисколько не осталось.

But there are … waffles. It`s an affirmative sentence, so we use ‘some’ in this case. Посмотрите на картинку. Но есть немного вафель. Это утвердительное предложение, и мы используем слово ‘some’. But there are some waffles if you like. Но есть немного/несколько вафель, если хочешь.

Have you got (any) fruit? Yes, I`ve got (some) grapes and an apple.

Have you got any fruit? Есть ли у тебя какие-нибудь фрукты? It`s a usual question. это обычный вопрос. So, the needed variant is ‘any’. Have you got any fruit?

Yes, I`ve got (some) grapes and an apple. Да, есть виноград и яблоко. This sentence is affirmative, so we use ‘some’ Так как это предложение утвердительное, то мы используем слово ‘some’ немного. I`ve got some grapes and an apple. У меня есть немного винограда и яблоко.

Фуф, And the last situation:

Would you like (some) juice? - No, thanks. Have you got (any) coke?  - Sorry, but I haven`t got (any).

Would you like (some) juice? - No, thanks. Хочешь немного сока? oh, I see! it`s an offer. Это предложение. Would you like…Хочешь ли ты? That`s why the correct variant here is ‘some’. Would you like some juice? No thanks.

Have you got … coke? Есть ли кола? MMMM It`s neither an offer nor a request. Это не предложение, да и не просьба. Это обычный общий вопрос. So, we use ‘any’/ Have you got any coke?

Sorry, but I haven`t got ... Извини, но нет. Отрицание. It`s a negative sentence. So, the needed variant is ‘any’. Sorry, I haven`t got any.
