We use this construction with the singular form of the nouns.

Now let’s talk about the construction “there are” in detail.

We use this construction with the plural form of the nouns.

For instance:

There are two letters on the desk.

Now let’s answer the question:

How do we form sentences with the constructions “there is” and “there are”?

To form positive sentences, we put the constructions “there is” and “there are” in the first place. After that we use the singular form of the noun or the plural form of the noun.

For example:

There is a double-decker bus in the High Street.

Or

There are three cars in the car park.

To form negative sentences, we put the constructions “there is” and “there are” in the first place. Then we put the particle “not”. The short forms are “there isn’t” and “there aren’t”. After that we use the singular form of the noun or the plural form of the noun.

For instance:

There isn’t a double-decker bus in the High Street.

Or

There aren’t three cars in the car park.

To form questions, we need to put the words “is” and “are” in front of “there”. After that we use the singular form of the noun or the plural form of the noun.

For example:
