Appearance and fashion (анализ эссе + тренировочные упражнения)

Прежде всего, напомним, что Ваше эссе по английскому языку должно осветить ВСЕ аспекты, изложенные в задании, а также должно быть написанным в соответствующем стиле (нейтральном). Оно должно логично делиться на 5 абзацев и соответствовать предложенному в задании плану.

Предположим, на экзамене перед Вами следующая задача:

Comment on the following statement:

Most people believe that it's important to look nice. However, some people say that we place too much importance on appearance and fashion.

What is your opinion? Do you agree with this statement?

Write 200-250 words.

Use the following plan:

·                   make an introduction (state the problem)

·                   express your personal opinion and give 2-3 reasons for your opinion

·                   express an opposing opinion and give 1-2 reasons for this opposing opinion

·                   explain why you don't agree with the opposing opinion

·                   make a conclusion restating your position

Make an introduction (state the problem)

Some people think that looking nice is important, whereas others believe people pay too much attention to it.

Express your personal opinion and give 2–3 reasons for your opinion

I think that to look nice is important. First of all, it makes a good first impression. A person is more confident if he or she knows they look good. Second, it makes all social interactions easier because people like those more if they are well-dressed or look beautiful.

Express an opposing opinion and give 1–2 reasons for this opposing opinion

At the same time, there are people who believe that men and women are too obsessed with their appearance. They spend too much time and money following changing fashions when those resources would be better spent elsewhere. Looks should not play that big a role in their lives.

Explain why you don't agree with the opposing opinion

I do not agree with this opinion. One cannot disregard their appearance completely. People like to be surrounded by those who are well-dressed, more than those who are not, and if one wants to get along with people, he or she should accept that.

Make a conclusion restating your position

In conclusion, I would like to say that there are opposing views on this issue. Even though one should not spend too much time on trying to look too fashionable, people should make some efforts to make sure they look nice enough to be around. Thus, I support the idea that it is important to look nice.

С объёмом все в порядке, поэтому можно проверять соответствие написанного теме.

Требуемый объём в эссе – 200–250 слов. Допустимо отклонение от заданного объёма на 10 %. То есть можно написать от 180 до 275 слов.

Если в выполненном задании 40 менее 180 слов, то задание проверке не подлежит и оценивается в 0 баллов. При превышении объёма более чем на 10 %, то есть если в задании 40 будет более 275 слов, проверке подлежит та часть работы, которая соответствует требуемому объёму.

Помним, что в первом абзаце мы должны: 1. перефразировать заголовок темы и 2. указать на существование двух противоположных точек зрения на проблему.

Наша тема звучит следующим образом:

Выберите из предложенных фраз те, которые вам могут быть полезными в перефразировании темы.

Подходящие выражения могут быть: to be fashionable, to pay attention, to look good, to give value, to look smart.

Выберите пару слов, которая отражает 2 противоположные точки зрения на проблему, согласно заявленной теме:

waste – is not waste

important – unimportant

fashionable – old-fashioned

to look nice – to look bad

Абзац 2. Собственная точка зрения и 2–3 аргумента в её поддержку.

Вот самые простые модели, как это можно сделать:

1.                 <Мнение>

2.                 <Аргумент>, because ...

3.                 <Аргумент>. That is why ...

4.                 <Аргумент>. For example, ...

Соотнесите предложения 2-го абзаца с пунктами плана.

1. в) I think that to look nice is important.

2. а) First of all, it makes a good first impression. A person is more confident if he or she knows they look good.

3. б) Second, it makes all social interactions easier because people like those more if they are well-dressed or look beautiful.

Выразите своё мнение по теме и приведите 2–3 аргумента в поддержку согласно схеме (вы можете использовать другие средства логической связи!):

Firstly, ...

Secondly, ...

Moreover,

Абзац 3. Противоположное мнение + 1–2 аргумента, подтверждающие это мнение.

Советуем изначально подумать о двух. А уж сколько в итоге написать, 1 или 2 – решите в процессе, исходя их получающегося размера Вашего эссе и фантазии.

При оспаривании аргументов Вы не должны повторять ничего из написанного во втором абзаце.

Выберите абзацы, которые могут быть написаны в эссе. Проанализируйте несоответствие остальных.

1. At the same time, there are people who believe that men and women are too obsessed with their appearance. They spend too much time and money following changing fashions when those resources would be better spent elsewhere. Looks should not play that big a role in their lives.

2. Others believe that people pay too much attention to it.

3. Others think that people give too much value to fashion. First, it takes a lot of money to keep yourself looking fashionable. Moreover, it is a never ending process because fashion changes frequently.

4. Others think that if a person follows some modern trends they lose valuable things in life.

Корректными являются 1-ый и 3-ий абзацы, т. к. в них изложено противоположное и аргументированное мнение.

В пункте 2 отсутствуют доводы, подтверждающие мнение.

Пункт 4 не совсем соответствует содержанию, т. к. в этом абзаце вы должны высказать мнение об отсутствии необходимости уделять так много внимания внешности в целом, а не только моде и современным трендам.

Абзац 4. Ваши контраргументы

В этом абзаце Вы должны объяснить, почему Вы не согласны с противоположным мнением.

При опровержении противоположных аргументов лучше всего предлагать пути их решения, а не доказывать их недееспособность.

Если Вы дали два аргумента в предыдущем абзаце, то и опровергнуть надо обязательно оба.

В нашем случае аргумент против был один.

5. Заключение с подтверждением авторской позиции.

В заключении надо 1) суммировать всё, о чем говорилось в эссе и 2) выразить свою точку зрения. Помните – никакой новой информации!

Попробуйте написать заключение, используя эту схему:

1) In conclusion, I would like to say that there are opposing views on this issue….

2) Thus, I support the idea that …

Вот как может выглядеть ваше заключение:

In conclusion, I would like to say that there are opposing views on this issue. Even though one should not spend too much time on trying to look too fashionable, people should make some efforts to make sure they look nice enough to be around. Thus, I support the idea that it is important to look nice.

In conclusion, I would like to say that there are opposing views on this issue.  At first sight looking nice seems not important but in actual fact one should take some efforts to make sure they look nice enough to be pleasant around. Thus, I support the idea of importance of looking nice.
