The USA

The country is situated in North America.

It is the 4th largest country in the world.

The discovery of America

In our days everybody knows what the word «America» means. First of all it’s the name of the country - the United States of America - or just America.

And then America is the name of the two continents - North America and South America.

These two continents, North and South America form the part of the word called America. Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. “In fourteen hundred and ninety- two Columbus sailed the ocean blue…”

American flag

The American flag is often called «The Stars and Stripes». There are three colours on the flag of the United States - red, white, and blue. As there are fifty states in the United States, there are fifty stars on the American flag: one star for each state. The American flag has thirteen stripes. The stripes are red and write. The flag has seven red stripes and six white stripes. There is one stripe for each of the first thirteen colonies of the United States.

The capital

The capital of the country is Washington. It was named after George Washington who chose the place for the capital and was the first American president.

The USA

• The population is 250 million people
• The official language is English.
• But the English language spoken in the USA is known as American English.
• There are 50 states in the USA.

There is no city like New York. It is known as «The City That Never Sleeps». The Statue of Liberty - a symbol of freedom is situated here.

Los Angeles is very big, noisy and famous all over the world because there is Hollywood. In Hollywood American films are made. And near Los Angeles there is wonderful fairy land called Disneyland.
