You are my sunshine, my only sunshine;

You make me happy when skies are gray.

You' 11 never know, dear, how much I love you;

Please don't take my sunshine away.

Light pink roses express: Fun and happiness.

White roses symbolize: Innocence and secrecy.

Black roses mean: Farewell.

Orange roses communicate: Desire on the part of the sender.

5.Video ( TED Talk:”Falling in love is the easy part”).

The Tasks Step 1: Introduction

The teacher puts the following on the board:4 minutes,     romantic,     laboratory,     36,     personal

T:These words describe the content of the video you are about to watch. Figure out what the video might be about using these keywords.

These are some words taken from the first part of Mandy’s talk:

I published this article in the New York Times Modern Love column in January of this year. “To Fall in Love With Anyone, Do This.” And the article is about a psychological study designed to create romantic love in the laboratory, and my own experience trying the study myself one night last summer.

So the procedure is fairly simple: two strangers take turns asking each other 36 increasingly personal questions and then they stare into each other’s eyes without speaking for four minutes.

Step 2: Watching the Talk, part 1

Students watch the first part of the video and fill in the missing information. Then check the answers.

T:Do you think Mandy and her boyfriend are still together ?

Step 3: Making questions a)The students heard 3 sample questions (out of 36) in the Talk.

T: Narrow down the definition of a “personal question”. What kinds of questions do you think were asked during the study (bearing in mind these questions were supposed to let people get to know each other and possibly fall in love in the process)?

b)(The teacher distributes the questions handout).

T:These are some questions about love Mandy mentions inher Talk. Fill in the gaps with verbs in red. Remember to change their form if necessary. Students work in pairs or individually).

1. ........................... you still together?

2. How do you .......................... who ......................... your love

and who does not?

3. How do you ...................in love when things get difficult,

and how do you know when to just ............... and .................?

4. How do you ..................... with the doubt that inevitably

........................... into every relationship?

c)T:Answer some questions about the premise of the study:

  • Is it possible to make strangers fall in love during a scientific study?

  • Why would some people fall in love during this experiment?

  • Are such relationships long-lasting? Why?

  • Would you agree to participate in such a study? Why?

Step 4: Watching the Talk, part 2

Continue watching the Talk until the end. They should answer 6 questions (video part 2).

Teacher:Watch the second part of the Talk and answer the questions

1. What was the goal of Dr Aron's study? 2. Was the study successful? 3. With whom was the study used? 4. How has researching the science of romantic love changed Mandy's attitude towards it? a) b) 5. What does Mandy want from love? 6. What is the short version of the story of Mandy's relationship?

Step 5: Discussion

T:In her talk Mandy states that the question “Are you still together” is the easiest and the least informative question to ask about love. In turn, she proposes several other questions that would shed more light on the issue of “loving somebody”.

Start the discussion with a quote from the Talk .Do you agree and why: “But falling in love is not the same thing as staying in love. Falling in love is the easy part”.

(The teacher distributes the Step 5: Discussion worksheets. Students need to fill in the gaps in the question with the verbs in red (all questions come from the Talk). Students need to pay attention to the verb forms and meaning).

6.Sum up.

T:Now our lesson is over! We've made so much today and as a conclusion of our lesson I wish you be always happy. And I extremely agree with Abraham Lincoln, who said "Most people are as happy as they make up their minds to be". Study foreign languages, not only English, and know traditions of foreign people because of it's very interesting.

7.Assessment and assignment:

T:Your marks are excellent. Thank you very much for the lesson.

I hope St. Valentine’s Day will bring you lots of fun. Love! Happiness! Beauty! There are not so many days in a year when we pronounce these pleasant words. I wish you Love! Happiness and Beauty!Good-bye, my friends!
