DETAILED LESSON PLAN

Greeting. Teacher: Good morning, children!

Children: Good morning!

T: How are you?

Ch: I am fine.

T: Very good. I am Irina Vladimirovna.

Warming-up. Can you tell me about yourselves?

Ch: Hi! My name is … I am from … I like …

T: Sorry! Can you spell your name, please?

T: Very nice. I am glad to see all of you at our unusual English lesson. Why is it so unusual? It is so because we have many on-line guests today. Let us greet them!

Ch: (singing the song) Hello, Hello! What’s your name? My name is… That’s my name.

T: Thank you. That was great. The topic of our lesson is … Well, I won’t tell you, but I can spell it. S-P-O-R-T. Can you guess it?

Ch: Sport!

T: You are right! We are going to speak about sport. Sport is an important part of our life. We like to take part in sports competitions. Sport helps us in different ways. Sport builds character. It teaches to win and to lose. It makes you strong and healthy, fast and patient. Sport helps to meet people. It teaches us to be disciplined.

Phonetic Drill.

T.: Now we must repeat some sounds to speak about kinds of sport.

[t] team, sport, tennis, table tennis

[r] cricket, run, ground, rugby

[w] wood, white, swimming, weight, weightlifting

[d] deep, end, speed, develop

Do you know the names for kinds of sport?

Ch: Hockey, swimming, running, athletics, volleyball, jumping, cycling etc

T: What summer sports do you know?

T: What winter sports do you know?

T: Very well! You know many words! In front of you there are many sheets of coloured paper. Please take the yellow ones. Your first “yellow” task is to pick out the words for sports (group 1) and the words for sport games (group 2). I can give you one minute for the task.

Group work 1.

Football, hockey, volleyball, basketball, rugby, soccer

Swimming, running, athletics, jumping, skiing, skating

T: Your time is up. Who will answer?

T: Well done!

T: Now can you tell us about your favourite sport (group 1)? It’s your home project.

Video project 1 “Sport”

Very well. You know many kinds of sport and your work is really interesting. Thank you. Are you good at sport? Let’s check. People who go in for different sports have different names.

How do we call people who play...

a) play football, volleyball, rugby, tennis, basketball;

b) do judo;

c) go swimming, jumping, running;

d) ride a bike?

What sport we can play? Go? Do? Check yourself: play football, tennis; go running, swimming; do gymnastics, aerobics.

Now Sport History. On your tables there are sheets of paper with texts. “About Some Records in Running” is the name of the text we are going to study now. What information does the text suggest? After reading the text we are going to fill in the chart:

Name of a sportsman

age

distance

medal

Time record

About Some Records in Running

Running competitions were held in ancient times. And they are still held. In 1992 in the Barcelona Olympic Games a new world record in the 100-meters race was set (). Linford Christie finished the race in 9.86 seconds. Linford was 32, he was the oldest runner who had ever won an Olympic sprint medal. He had won more medals than any other British athletes.

Now you read the text in groups and fill in the chart. One of you will do it on the whiteboard.

It’s interesting to know. A vertical marathon - is a special running competition, in which people have to get to the top of a very high building going upstairs. Vertical marathons are held in different countries of the world every year. They are very popular. The start of the marathon is on the ground floor of the skyscraper, and the finish is on the top floor. Many people come to see this competition. And it is really difficult because a common man can run no farther than the tenth floor!

Are you tired? Let’s have some music! Musical break “Head, shoulders, knees and toes”

Our next task is … Oh, here is a letter. It is from our friend from Great Britain. It is a video letter. Let’s watch it and then answer questions. The questions are on the green sheets of paper. It is our “green task”. (Watching video)

Video tape script: Hello! My name is Kevin. I’m from Great Britain. I live in London. I am 11. I like sport very much. We play different sport games at school, but my favourite game is like this. There are 11 players in a team. In summer we play outdoors on a big field of green grass. In winter we play indoors. We play it with a round ball. We kick the ball all the time and try to score a goal. Can you guess the game? Well, good-bye. Tell me about your favourite game. See you soon. Bye!

T: Can you guess the game? It’s football. But British people say “soccer”. Now group 1 will ask questions and group 2 will answer them. I can give you two minutes to get ready. (asking and answering questions)

1. What is the name of the boy? His name is Kevin.

2. Is Kevin from Great Britain or from the USA? Kevin is from Great Britain.

3. How many players are there in the team? There are 11 players in it.

4. What do they play with? They play the game with a round ball.

5. Where do they play this game? They play it indoors and outdoors.

T: Sport History. Many different sports have deep roots. Football is among them. What are the main dates in the history of football? Tick your suggestions on the sheets of paper in front of you.

*Football has been played… 1) for hundred of years. 2) since 1863. 3) since the 19th century.

*Football has been played with proper (right, correct) rules … 1) since early times. 2) since 1863. 3) since the 19th century.

*The FA Cup competitions have been held … 1) since the end of the 19th century. 2) since 1863. 3) since the middle of the 19th century.

Now let’s check our suggestions. Read the text and find the correct answers.

Football

Football has been played in one form or another for a hundred of years. First it was a very rude and hard game. There were no rules. But since 1863 it has been played with proper rules. That year the Football Association (the FA) was started. Its first job was to get a set of rules for all teams. By the end of the 19th century almost every town had its own team. The modern game was introduced to other countries by British soldiers, seamen and businessmen. Today, every country has its own football team. One of the main competitions of the football season is the FA Cup. It has been held every May at the famous Wembley stadium in London since the middle of the 19th century.

T: If you want to go in for certain sports you need certain traits of character and skills. What skills should football players have?

A football player

Needs to

Doesn’t need to

Must

Has to

Doesn’t have to

Run fast.

Be patient.

Be strong.

Be clever.

Think clearly.

Be fit.

Have a lot of energy.

Have a great wish to win.

T: Now can you tell us about your favourite sport game (group 2)? It’s your home project.

Video project 2 “Sport game”

T: There are red sheets of paper on your tables. Your “red” task is to find the end of the proverbs.

After dinner sit a while, - after supper walk a mile.

An apple a day - keep doctors away.

Good health is - above wealth.

Health is better - than wealth

T: Marvelous! Now we are going to read a short text about hobbies. The texts are on your tables. What is the name of the text?

P: “My Hobby”

T: That’s right. Let’s read the text first. We are going to do it aloud.

My hobby

Every person has a hobby. When I have free time, I have my hobby. My hobby is playing football. I go in for sports. And I think that I will be a good football-player. I play in school team and I like it. On Sunday my friend and I usually go to the cinema and prefer to see films about football and about sport. I wish you to go in for sports because it helps you to be healthy and very active.

Task 1. Find the equivalent

1. играть в футбол
 to play chess
 to play football
 to play the game

2. школьная команда
 a school table
 a school team
 a school member

3. ходить в кино
 go to the cinema
 go to school
 go to me

4. заниматься спортом
 go in for sports
 go in for home
 go in for sport

5. быть активным
 to be a pupil
 to be act
 to be active

T: Excellent. And you are active today at the lesson.

Now let’s match pictures and names of the kinds of sports. Say the number of the picture and name the kind of sport in the picture.

T: Our “orange” task is making posters. Make a poster. Group 1 – “Sports”, Group 2 – “Sport Games”. While you are getting ready, you’ll listen to a poem.

T: Zalina learnt a poem. Listen to her and guess the toy.

My Ball

It is blue

And green and red,

It bounces higher than my head.

It does not want

To stop at all.

What is it?

It is my … (ball)

T: Very nice, thank you. Well, your time is up. Tell us about your posters. Group 1. Group 2. Thank you for your job.

T: Brief Quiz. How much do you know about the Olympic Games? Do the quiz and find out.

Do you like puzzles? There are many puzzles with the words concerning Sport. Very often the word “Ball” helps us to find a hidden word. (Ballerina, Balloon) There are puzzles with the hidden names of sport in them. (Chess)

Every sportsman wishes to have this thing. (Medal)

Athletes are very happy when they reach this thing first. (Finish)

But the main thing in every kind of sport is not medals, prizes and first places. The main thing is always …(Friendship)

Look at the whiteboard. Say what kinds of sports you see in the Letter-Box. Draw out the word you see.

T: Our lesson is coming to an end.

Do you like sport? Do you enjoy sport? Are you a good sportman? What is your favourite sport?

Your hometask is to speak about your favourite kind of sport.

Reflection. Give me your ideas of the lesson. If you don’t like the lesson, raise “A Cloud” flash-card. If you like the lesson, then raise “A Sun” flash-card. Oh, so many “Suns” we have got. Thank you so very much. Now, let’s sing the “Good-bye” song.

The lesson is over. Thank you for your excellent answers. Good-bye!
