Afanasy Nikitin

was a Russian merchant of Tver and first Russian  in India

About 550 years ago in 1469   Afanasy Nikitin reached the sultanate of Bahmani in India, crossed the Arabian Sea.

He was the first who documented his visit to India.

He had lived in India for 3 years and told them about his religion and land. He described his trip in a narrative known as

Leo Tolstoy was a Russian writer

one of the greatest authors of all time.

Leo Tolstoy began to show great concern over the fate of India.

He became the very famous person in India.

Leo Tolstoy defended the rights of Indian people and they expected the speeches of the Russian writer in defense of their homeland.

His works had an important role for the Indian people.

Nicholas Roerich

was a Russian painter, writer and archaeologist

In 1935 Nicholas Roerich

went to India and stayed there for 12 years.

That time was very successful in his creativity. He painted about 1000 artworks, 2 new books and a lot of feature stories .

Indian people appreciated Roerich

Art very much.

From 1932 to 1947 there were 18 major exhibitions of Roerich‘s paintings in different cities of India.

Since 1932, Indian Allahabad had the Roerich centre of art and culture.

During the Cold War, India and the Soviet Union (USSR) enjoyed a strong strategic, military, economic and diplomatic relationship.

1961 -the student exchange program between the two countries

1980- there are 30 universities with Russian department

(6000 Indians study Russian)

Nowadays – a lot of schools with Russian language

The annual festival of the Russian language "Beryoza" for middle school students

The festival programme included master classes "Gzhel" and "Russian dance" and various contests.

Pupils competed in the art of translation from Russian into English, reading poems in Russian.

In the performance of Indian children sounded Russian songs. In the framework of the festival organized a drawing competition on a Russian theme.

The annual festival of the Russian language "Beryoza" for middle school students

This year's most exciting cultural program was a theatrical production based on the Russian folk tale “ Teremok ” by students of Junior and middle classes.

The audience also warmly greeted the performance of the winners of choral reading with a humorous poem by Samuel Marshak , “the Lady handed over in Luggage.”

As a return gift Indian friends, students of the school under the Embassy of Russia in India sang the song on the verses by Alexander Pushkin “I remember a wonderful moment...”

Traditional Russian Art show

In a show a team of Russian singers and dancers presented soulful music and elegant dance moves.

The songs, which are part of the centuries-old tradition of Russia amazed Indians.

The performance of the 15-day Russian Music and Dance festival gave a sneak peek into the various aspects of Russia's traditional art forms.

Russian language programmes through videoconferencing

The Russian Centre of Science and Culture started Russian language training programmes for college students through video conferencing.

“ Students of 20 colleges in Tamil Nadu received training in Russian language through the programme”

The exhibition on the ‘World Classical Tamil Conference was opened during this week.

Indian people said that Russia was one of the first countries to recognise independent India.

Russian film festival and a photo exhibition in  Chennai  is the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.  

Inaugurating the film festival, Nikolay A. Listopadov, Consulate General of the Russian Federation in South India said the films being screened reflected different aspects of the Russian society and were of different genres such as thriller and melodrama.

“ Children will love ‘The Little Mermaid', and the ‘Gypsies are found near heaven' is like a musical. Viewers will enjoy watching these films,” he said.
