Roald Dahl was born in 1916 at Villa Marie, Fairwater Road, in Llandaff, Cardiff. Harald Dahl and Sofie Magdalene Dahl , his parents, were Norwegians. His first language was Norwegian, which he spoke at home with his parents and his sisters Astri, Alfhild, and Else. The children were raised in the Lutheran faith and were baptised at the Norwegian Church, Cardiff. His father died when the boy was 3 years old and he was raised by his mother.

He was unhappy at St. Peter's boarding school in Weston-super-Mare: he was very homesick and wrote to his mother every week but never revealed his unhappiness to her. After school he went to Africa to work for the Shell Oil Company .

World War II Roald Dahl signed up with the Royal Air Force. He became a pilot and, then an intelligence officer, rising to the rank of acting wing commander. He was forced to attempt a landing in the desert. Unfortunately, he was injured in action. He became an invalid and returned home.  Roald Dahl was sent to Washington DC to work as an attaché. There he started his writing career. Roald Dahl was interviewed for an article about his time in action. He wrote about his experiences. It was published in the Saturday Evening Post, which signed him up to write more articles.
