“Where is it?” – people from other cities ask me when I say that I live in Yakutsk. People look at the map, notice location of the city and think: “It is very cold there”. Also many of them think that residents swim in diamonds, and that deers and polar bears walk in the streets of the town. Yakutsk is the capital of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia). It is the town of extremes and contrasts, at first sight it seems very silent and gray, but the impression can change sharply to the best at any time.
The most appreciable extreme is the weather. Probably, inhabitants of the far north are one of the most hardly people on the planet. The temperature is30-40 degrees above zero Celsius in summer and 50 degrees below zero by centigrade in winter. Paradoxically people dream of an intolerable heat of July in January and in summer of winter hard frost. Bright contrast is a distinctive mark of new glass buildings are neighboring with the relics of architecture and very old wooden houses. As a result our town looks very unusual and unique.
Traditions and national holidays are very much appreciated in Yakutia. They arrange a grandiose holiday where everyone can have fun and play national kinds of sports.
Every four years the International Sport Games “Children of Asia” are held, where young athletes from foreign countries and Russia take part in them.
People are very friendly and trendy and, in particular the youth, students of high and higher schools. They differ from young people of other towns. The Yakut youth has a great sense of style, they aren’t afraid to follow even the most extraordinary fashion. They aren’t afraid to express their individuality in one way or another and I am very glad that there are many such young people among my pals.
Our capital Yakutsk is continually developing. It has a huge prospect. I love my hometown very much. I am proud of that I live in a place which is developing without losing its uniqueness.
