Lesson one.

The Number Stuff and the Numbers Line

Цель урока:

 а) обобщить понятие числа и координатной прямой, отработать названия чисел и их запись по - английски.

 б) ввести понятие отрицательного числа

 в) изучить новую лексику.

 New words:

1. number – число

 2. digit - цифра

3. stuff – понятие, материал, вещь

4. stiсk – скрепить, соединить

5. hundred – сотня, сотни

 6. ten – десять, десяток

7. thousand – тысяча, тысячи

8. unit (s) – единица (ы)

9. in the correct order – в правильном порядке

10. from the smallest to the largest - от наименьшего к наибольшему

11. negative numbers – отрицательные числа

12. minus - минус

13. sign - знак

14. minus sign – знак «минус»

15. direct – направлять

16. direction - направление

17. mark – отметить

All numbers are made of digits:

1. A digit is one of these: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

2. We stick them together to write bigger numbers: 10; 23; 256; 3761; and so on.

Write: ten; twenty three; two hundred and fifty six; three thousand seven hundred and sixty one.

Task 1.

 Write numbers in words:

 37 – thirty seven

825 – eight hundred and twenty five

1325 – one thousand three hundred and twenty five

2541 – two thousand five hundred and forty one

It’s numbers line.

These are easy to put numbers in order from the smallest to the largest.

Task 2.

 Write these numbers in the correct order:

5; 2; 31; 6; 22; 18; 0; 12, call them.

So; what about this part of the numbers line?

Sometimes we need to use numbers less than zero. We call them negative numbers.

We write them with minus sign in front.

They are here! It’s a negative part of the numbers line!

The numbers line is really useful for understanding negative numbers.

The numbers line is like a huge thermometer scale that goes forever in both directions.

 - 4 is a bigger number then - 7, - 10, because it’s situated to the right on the numbers line.

It’s easy to think that - 10 is bigger than - 6, because 10 is bigger than 6. But check the number line and you’ll see that it’s not.

Task 3

Mark on the numbers line the next numbers:

 - 2; - 5; 0; 1; - 8; 5.

Home task:

Write in words;

186; 39; 46; 5; - 4; 0; - 10; 81; 9.

Mark these numbers on the numbers line:

5; 0; - 6; 1; - 2; 10; - 1.

Subtracting numbers.

Subtracting is just «take away».

You must «find the difference».

Find the difference between 435 and 162

1. 435 is bigger than 162, so

Plus and minus are opposites.
