We are happy that you have come to our Grammar School. We would like to invite you to our discussion. Nowadays travelling and spending holidays abroad are getting increasingly popular. Some people are just crazy about going to exotic countries.

But there are also some drawbacks.

Some people enjoy spending their vacation in our native country.

And now you are welcome to our discussion. We will try to find out “pluses” and “minuses” of going on holidays abroad.

We will also be glad to listen to your points of view.

And at the end of the hour we want you to write an essay on this topic. Thank you and you are welcome.

My Journey to Cyprus

Most people find travelling very exciting. It gives them an opportunity to enjoy sightseeing, to discover new things, to meet interesting people, to rest physically and morally and to get wonderful impressions.

For me there is hardly anything more interesting and exciting than a journey to a foreign country. I’ve been to Turkey, Spain and Egypt and it is the most wonderful experience in my life. Travelling abroad gives me a chance to feel thousands of miles away from home, to visit great cities and small villages, to admire foreign architecture, cuisine and culture and what not. What is more, it is the best way to broaden your mind, to improve your knowledge of history and geography and to make your life interesting.

The republic of Cyprus is very interesting for me. It was a stunning experience in my life. The sights I visited in Cyprus are:

the Donkey farm, here you can learn to ride a donkey, it’s fun! After riding on a donkey, you go to the Monastery. there you can touch the holy icon “Saint Mother and Jesus” painted by Saint Luke.

Cyprus is famous for its wines and olives. Wines are of various sorts from “Alexandria” to “Lambouri”. One of the best olive oil in the world is made here.

Also Cyprus has got a very popular dance – SIRTAKE, you can learn to dance it on the Donkey Farm.

I like Cyprus! It has interesting culture and lifestyle, so I advise you to visit Cyprus!

To conclude, many people say that once you have tasted the excitement of visiting exotic destinations, you’ll never want to stop. However, tourists must make precautions in order to avoid unpleasant situations and to remain safe and secure.

Difficulties in buying tickets and getting a visa

Let us begin with the basic care of all the tourists – registration of their passports and getting a visa. Besides that preparation of the above stated documents is extra charges, it also takes valuable time. It is also possible that you won’t get the visa. A language barrier can draw upon you all possible troubles and funny situations. You should constantly carry a phrase book or waste time and money for rates of accelerated studying of the language necessary to you. And as a minus there can be not stable economical or political conditions.

For those who are going to spend holidays with children Russian resorts can become a unique choice. Children adapt to another climate very hard. If you have necessity or a desire you can always invite relatives or friends to the place where you have your rest or at any moment without any problems you can come back home. Both would be very difficult to carry out being abroad. Certainly it is not necessary to forget about the cultural moment of rest within the limits of the native land. You have an opportunity to learn history and cultural features of that part of Russia in which you spend your time. And, in my opinion, you may spend a wonderful vacation in our country; sometimes it can be even more interesting than outside the country.

A Language school in Ireland

Last year I spent my spring holidays in Ireland, in Emerald Cultural University. I had a great time there and met a lot of interesting people.

Ireland is a very beautiful country with wonderful landscapes and lots of sights. I visited Newgrandge (a sacred place which is more ancient than the Egyptian pyramids), trinity College (one of the best colleges of Ireland) and of course a lot of museums and cathedrals.

Dublin is a very unusual city for me. It is located on the eastern coast of Ireland and surrounded by mountains. The city’s climate is much milder than in Russia, in spring the temperature can be about 20 degrees above zero. There aren’t any skyscrapers, people are used to living in their own houses.

Every school has got a school uniform which children must wear. The city is very clean – you can’t find any rubbish on the streets and there aren’t any traffic jams. There are a lot of parks in Dublin. One of the most beautiful of them is St. Stephens Green Park in the centre of the city near Trinity College.

Irish people have got their own language. You can see a lot of artists, musicians and conjurers on Dublin’s streets.

The Irish celebrate St Patrick’s Day on the 17^th of March every year. This is a very bright celebration with carnivals.

I think if you spend holidays abroad you learn a lot of new information about other countries. You can see how people from other countries live, you can see what they like and what is necessary for them.

The Northern Capital

Many people think that rest and travelling abroad is better than in our country. But real advantages are on Russia’s side.

One of these fine places is St Petersburg. St Petersburg is a great city. It was founded by peter the Great in the eighteenth century. Many historic events are connected with this city. The main Federal City Day is the 27^th of May. Nowadays about 7 million people live in this megapolise officially and nearly ten million not officially (students and immigrants). Some time ago this city was the capital of Russia but now the Russian capital is Moscow. St Petersburg has got a lot of beautiful places, museums and other cultural centres. For example the Hermitage, Petergoff, Tsarskoe selo, Nevskiy prospect, Cronstadt, etc. Millions of tourists visit our northern capital every year.

I have been to Petersburg several times and I like it because you can find many historical and art places in Russia. We can be very proud of St Petersburg.

Mysterious Thailand

Thailand is a beautiful country which welcomes tourists to visit its coasts. This country is attractive and you don’t need to get a visa – anyone can visit it. The second reason why tourists choose Thailand is the cultural richness of this country. When you visit the country you can eat ethnic cuisine dishes and European food. Picturesque nature combined with excellent service and the seas have made Thailand a popular destination for rest. You can also learn about their religion – Buddizm. The open card of this country is Thai massage which is different from usual European massage. So the time spent in Thailand won’t be wasted!

In my opinion exotic travel gives you an opportunity to participate in exciting experiences. In exotic countries you can ride a camel or an elephant, enjoy modern cities or picturesque little villages, admire ancient temples and what not. Travelling to exotic countries many tourists would like to watch the daily life of local people, to see mountains, jungles and beaches. I believe that exotic travel is very rewarding because it can lead to totally new understanding of different cultures and lifestyles.

And I prefer Sochi

Arranging a perfect travel to exotic places is not an easy task. Travel agencies show tourists colourful catalogues with beautiful beaches and modern hotels. Most people find it difficult to explore this immensity of offers and spot the one that would let them admire a truly stunning seaside, good service, clean beaches and high quality hotels. Many tourists fall ill when they go to an exotic country because they do not know much about its traditions and do not understand the language. Some tourists may dislike the local food. Furthermore they have no natural immunity to foreign diseases. In addition tourists may have problems with insects, public transport thieves, and street vendors and so on.

Many people think that holidays abroad are ideal for relaxing and forgetting everything but I am sure, it is not like this. There is great choice of resorts where you can relax in Russia.

One of these places is Sochi. If you come here, you will have a lot of advantages which make your holidays unforgettable. Firstly, it is easier for you to adapt to the new conditions such as the weather and food. Secondly, you may relax in Sochi and it will be much cheaper than abroad. Thirdly, Sochi also has a variety of delicious fruit and vegetables. The next reason is that in Sochi you can speak Russian and everyone will understand you.

Of course everyone has the right to choose but I prefer to have a rest in Sochi.

Fascinated by Spain

As for me I love travelling abroad. Last year I was in Spain, Barcelona. It is a very beautiful city. There is the museum of Salvador Dali, his art is very unusual to my mind.

There are many sights for example Mountain Moncerat, monks live there, or Gaudie’s church and Gaudie’s park. They are very beautiful places! Besides, I saw Flamenco dance there and I was fascinated by it.

The Spanish are very kind, polite and patient people there are also clean beaches and clear sea. That’s why I believe it is better to spend your holidays abroad.

Krasnodar is my second native city

Each person should decide for himself where and how he will rest. I prefer to relax in our country, not abroad. Most often I can rest in the city where my grandmother lives in Krasnodar. I visit this city every summer. A vacation in Krasnodar is better than in any other country because:

• it can be safe and you can speak your own language;

• you can go to the Black sea in 2 hours;

• it has warm, dry and sunny weather;

• there are fruit and vegetables from your garden and many other wonderful things;

A lot of people are sure that there is much to be seen in your own country. Indeed, it is difficult to disagree with them. There are many places of interest in my native country: ancient churches, monuments and parks. One can go to Moscow and visit its theatres, cathedrals, art galleries and what not. The Kremlin attracts thousands of tourists as it is the heart of Moscow and the centre of the Russian government. St Petersburg, the former capital of Russia, is known for its magnificent palaces, famous museums, beautiful buildings and wide streets. Besides, there are many small tows and villages in our country which are definitely worth visiting.

To conclude, we should learn everything about our own country first of all. But if we want to learn more about the world around us and to expand the mind, we should travel abroad.

Island of Bali

Today I would like to speak about the island of Bali. This paradise is located in the Indian Ocean. It is the extreme point of the Sundra Islands. The capital of the island is Denpasar. The area of the island is 5, 790 km, the length is 150 km.

There are 2 active volcanoes on Bali. Volcanic activity causes high soil fertility and affects the development of culture.

The average temperature varies slightly around 26 degrees. The temperature of the water in the ocean is 26-28 degrees. You can find rare species of plants and huge ancient trees on this island. There are plants of the family fig and banana groves. Banana palms on Bali are sacred, they are very well grown and fed to many animals.

The population of Bali is about 3 million people. Bali is a Hindu society living on the territory of the Muslim country and is constantly in contact with foreigners. Balinese people are quite friendly with tourists but not with the Indonesians on the other island.

Rich culture of the local population is expressed in their craft. The island is famous for its traditional wooden sculptures made in pagan and Hindu traditions. Cult classic Balinese souvenir is Batik painting on silk.

Bali is a real surfing Mecca there are Russian world-class surf schools. each year millions of tourists come to the island of Bali. They are attracted to the beauty and the ancient culture of the paradise.

It is safer to rest in Russia

It is a good ides to visit a foreign country but day after day it becomes more dangerous. There are a lot of reasons which can spurn you of having this idea.

1. For travelling abroad you need to have some knowledge of the language. it is essential.

2. Registration of a foreign passport and getting a visa is very difficult and as a rule it is a long-time process.

3. The statistics says that there are a huge numbers of occasions when buses with Russian tourists have accidents abroad. As a result a lot of people die and some of them become cripples for ever.

4. Lack of medical care. It is a problem to get medical help if something is wrong. Nobody is responsible fro your health except you.

5. Food poisoning is quite possible because exotic food can be toxic for us. The Russians taste exotic food and have intoxication which can cause health problems.

6. In the Eastern countries you must follow local customs and religious traditions. For example you should wear a long skirt and you mustn’t walk without a man who must be your friend or husband. It may also become the reason of an international conflict.

7. Foreign nature differs from ours. Accidents with sharks in the sea happen very often abroad. Many people suffered from sharks and there were a lot of fatal accidents.

8. Stereotypes and prejudice about Russian tourists are the reason for infringement of independence of our peaceful tourists.
