IVANOVKA IN THE LIFE OF S. RAKHMANINOV
Every year in spring or early days of summer a quiet village in the southeast of Tambov province attracts crowds of visitors from all over the world. Music lovers of all ages come to the World Music Festival held in Ivanovka, the place where a great Russian composer Rakhmaninov spent 23 years of his life. It is here that he first fell in love. Here he composed most of his masterpieces, such as concerts for piano and orchestra, the First Symphony, preludes, operas, symphonic poems and 42 out of 83 romances.
Rakhmaninov first visited Ivanovka in 1890 as a 17-year-old student of Moscow Conservatoire and got fascinated with the beauty of the place. In 1902 Sergey married his cousin Natalie Satina and settled down in Ivanovka. Their daughters were also born there. Rakhmaninov loved composing in his old park, inspired by the beautiful nature. When he got tired of composing, he walked in the park, went fishing or horse-riding.
In 1917 the composer decided to leave Russia because he didn't support the ideas of new revolutionary government.
Rakhmaninov lived in the USA and achieved great success as a pianist and conductor, but he could not compose music, he was longing for Ivanovka.
He died in 1943 and was buried in the Russian cemetery not far from New York. Rakhmaninov's death was a heavy loss for the admirers of his music. His melodies appeal to people's hearts filling them with warmth, courage, faith, and love of life.
After the revolution Ivanovka was robbed and ruined. Only in 1982 the Memorial House of Rakhmaninov was opened to visitors. The director of the House A.Yermakov takes care of the estate and keeps it clean and beautiful. The park and the orchard are full of flowers; there is plenty of fish in the pond.
Keeping the house and estate requires a lot of money. The Memorial House also needs money for restoration work, for arranging concerts and guided tours. Since this wonderful memorial place is part and parcel of our culture, its problems should be everybody's concern.
