Now I’d like you to watch a video. Then we’ll discuss it and you’ll try to guess the theme of our lesson and we’ll define its aims.

Are you ready? Come on then.

So, guys, where are these people going?

Well, thanks. But what problems can all of them face there?

That’s right! And what do people call all of these problems?

What do they feel arriving in different country?

Sure ! What is the theme of our lesson?

Yes, you are right!

So, today we are going to discuss the problem of a “culture shock” that a traveler has got when travelling abroad or visiting another city or another family.

So, what is culture shock?

Nice, well done!

Now, try to guess what we’ll do in class?

Excellent! Also we are going to read and listen to people who travelled abroad and experienced different problems there. Of course, you’ll try to give advice how to cope with such problems and avoid culture shock. You have to hear information you need to discuss the problem of a culture shock and answer the question “ Is culture shock rewarding or challenging?”

Are you ready to start?

Well, let’s begin.

I think culture shock… It's when you get interested in situation where you are settled in a different culture and you don`t quite understand how it goes and you are trying to figure it out and you realize that there are so many differences from your culture. So, you go like: “Oh my God. This on this side of the world is like this”

We’ll speak about:

  1. The weather

  2. About English food

  3. About British etiquette

  4. About traditions and customs

  5. Difficulties with the language

Yes, we are. With great pleasure

Now I want you to open the books on page 83.

Here is a text Steven Marshal.

Look at the questions in the text.

What is the interview about?

Great! And now listen, read and check your answers.

  1. Why did he decide to spend a year studying abroad?

  1. What have been the best parts of his experience?

  1. And what about the challenging parts?

  1. What would he say to other young people considering studying abroad?

And now, let’s read the text again and mark the statements T (true) or F (false).

If a statement is false correct it using Present Perfect Progressive Tense.

Let’s remember its structure: have/has been + Ving

One of you can do this exercise online.

So, now it has become easier to discuss or analyse all culture shock components.

Why can people be shocked during their stay abroad?

Use modal verbs in your answers.

Let’s watch video and answer my questions.

Video “ Weather”

What is the weather like in GB?

Another component of culture shock is….

Video “Food”

What do English people have for breakfast and lunch?

Name the traditional British food.

What is the third moment of culture shock?

Since every country has its own set of dos and don’ts, it’s worthwhile to find out just what it means to be polite before getting on the plane.

Here are a few of the most important rules of behavior.

Now let’s check your homework.

You were to prepare the information about social etiquette. Some of you are going to share your knowledge with us.

What about the most important rules of behavior in the UK?

You see there can be a lot of strange things in the places you visit. You always communicate with people. Which topics are possible to discuss and which ones are not?

So I would like you to make up small dialogues.

Look at the screen. You see the table. Please ask questions or say remarks to illustrate the possible and impossible topics for small talks in pairs.

People can struggle to get used to the weather.

  • Rainy. It rains 4 days a week, 192 days a year.

People may try to get used to food.

  • English people usually have…..

They must be shocked because they have difficulty understanding social etiquette and might find it hard to make friends.

Monoloques:

Say Hello.

Learn the Gestures.

Dine with Ease. / Thank your host.

Makesmalltalk.

  1. - Hello! How was your flight?

  • It was OK, thank you.

  1. – Hello! Nice weather today, isn’t it?

  • Oh, yes it is.

  1. - ….., do you like cats?

  • Yes, I do. I’ve got a cute Scottish kitten! Would you like to see its photo?

  1. – Hi! What do you do in your free time?

  • Sport. I like football.

  1. – Are you interested in rap style?

  • Oh, no. I’m keen in techno. My favourite band is …

Now we are going to listen to the text.

Let us repeat the words from it, paying attention to the pronunciation and their meaning.

You are going to listen to the interview with four people.

You’ll listen to it once and fill in the second and the third columns in the table.

Look at the table. Are you ready? Let’s begin then.

Now let’s listen to the recording again and complete the rest of the table.

Now let’s check your answers.

And now the next component of culture shock is customs and traditions. I’ve got a surprise for you.

We are going to travel to New Zealand because we are invited to a wedding ceremony.

………

Imagine we are on board a plane, we are flying over the Pacific ocean to Wellington (the capital of New Zealand).

We are in a café, watching one of the most surprising traditions.

……..

What are all these people doing?

What does this dance mean?

Why is it so aggressive and emotional?

Are you shocked? Me too! Why? Because we didn’t know that Haka-dance is a traditional wedding Maory tribe dance. People want a new couple to be happy for all their family life. Do you understand this tradition now?

Ok!

Have you caught what I’ve said?

What language have I spoken?

So, what is the most important component of culture shock?

Of course language skills!

Now, let us summarize everything.

I want you to divide into two groups and create tips for a traveler.

What should or shouldn’t we do living or going abroad.

Well, guys, our lesson is coming to its end.

It was a great pleasure to work with you.

Did you like our lesson?

What did you find the most interesting in our lesson today?

So, is culture shock challenging or rewarding?

Both, of course. You are right!

Definitely!

No doubt about it!

………

In my opinion it is both challenging and rewarding!

10

You have to choose your homework for next lesson .
