What is the theme of our lesson?
Pictures appear one by one while the teacher reads the lines (see below). The pupils are supposed to guess the theme of the lesson.
The first step: pupils suggest such theme as “Friends”. The second step: the teacher asks them to form the general noun that refers to 1) a state of being friends; friendly relation, or attachment, to a person, or between persons, or 2) a relationship that can survive the test of time and remain unconditional. Finally they elicit the theme of the lesson that is “Friendship”.
Text for audio:
Fight for you
Respect you
Include you
Encourage you
Need you
Deserve you
Stand by you
Task 1. a) Look at the pictures and try to choose the words or a phrase to describe them
The pupils are expected to use the following phrases (Student’s Book, Unit 3, Lesson 14):
to ask and answer questions in class
to tell the truth
to do homework
to help your friends
to be a good listener
to listen to your teacher and classmates
to do the chores
to be friendly
to be on time
Task 1. b) Point out the phrases related to the characteristic of "a good friend".
The pupils complete the test. Than they read their answers to the rest of the group. The teacher gives them the task to make up the sentences using the chosen phrases and adverbs of frequency (always, usually, often, never, sometimes). It should be reminded that the adverbs of frequency are placed between the subject and the predicate but after the verb “to be”.
Task 1. c) Make up the dialogues and discuss with your partner what a person is considered to be a good friend. You may use the model given below.
A: Hello,..!
B: Hi,..! How are you?
A: I’m fine, thanks! I haven’t seen you for ages. What are you doing in the library?
B: Well, I have to write an essay about friendship for my English classes. I need to study some extra materials to do it well.
A: I see. And what does it mean to be a good friend?
B: As for me, a real friend is someone who…What’s about you? What do you think?
A: To my mind…
B: …I was glad to see you. I must go now. Have a good day!
A: …Bye!
Task 2. Mark the words with + / - depending on what features of character help friendship or keep from it. Write down the words in two columns in your copy-books. You are free to use the dictionaries to complete the task.
Task 3. Using the words from previous task and your own life experience prepare a brief message about a person who can’t be considered as a good friend. Please use the constructions given below
I can’t stand people who are…
- Мне не нравятся люди, которые…
- Мне не нравятся люди, которые…
I think a person who is…can’t be a real friend
- Я считаю, что человек, который.., не может быть настоящим другом
- Я считаю, что человек, который.., не может быть настоящим другом
Task 4. Form the nouns using the adjectives from the table in your copy-books
It should be reminded that we use suffixes –ness, -y to form general nouns. There are homonyms in the English language. These are the words that are the same in writing and pronunciation but of different part of speech (forgiving, understanding).

Home task
I want you to write an essay about your best friend basing on the following questions:
- What is his/her name?
- How old is he/she?
- How long have you been friends?
- Why do you look upon him/her as a true friend?
- Please note that you should use 80-90 words.
Self analysis
1 2
Ask the pupils to look at the pictures and write on the sheets of paper number 1 if they liked the lesson (the theme seemed to them important and interesting, it made them analyze their behavior and features of character), and number 2 if they didn’t like the lesson for any reason. All the papers are anonymous.

I wish everyone could say
I can talk with a friend
and walk with a friend
and share my umbrella in the rain.
I can play with a friend
and stay with a friend
and learn with a friend and explain.
I can eat with a friend
and compete with a friend
and even sometimes disagree.
I can ride with a friend
and take pride with a friend.
A friend can mean so much to me!
Thank you for your attention and participation!
