Today the theme of our lesson is “Penfriends”. And now, look at the board, please:
My name is Aigul. I am from Kazakhstan. I’m Kazakh. I’ve got lots of friends in my country but I also have friends in other countries such as Great Britain, Russia, the USA,etc. We can’t meet with each other and that’s why we write letters. They are my penfriends. The word “penfriends” consists of two words: ‘pen’ and ‘friend’ .
T: How can you translate these words? (pupils answer).
Phonetic drill:
In order to have penfriends in other countries first of all we must know the names of countries and nationalities.Look at the board.
Argentina – Argentinean
Great Britain – British
Kazakhstan – Kazakh
Russia – Russian
Poland – Polish
Turkey – Turkish (teacher reads the words and pupils listen to the teacher, then they repeat after the teacher in chorus).
T: There are some examples with these words:
My friend is from Turkey. He is Turkish.
Akhmet is from Kazakhstan. He is Kazakh.
My favourite film star is from the States. She is American.
Listening and speaking:
T: You will meet these words (the name of the countries and nationalities) in our letter from Gabrilla. Now you will listen to the letter and try to fill the gaps about Gabrilla’s favourite film star, pop star, and sports star.
Listening to the letter.
Hi Sue.
My name is Gabriella Fernandez. I’m your new penfriend. I’m from Rosario in Argentina. Now I am in Cambridge in England. It’s Great!
My favourite film star is from the States. His name’s Tobey Maguire and he’s great! My favourite pop star is Jennifer Lopes. She is American – she is a film star and a pop star. My favourite sports sta isn’t American. She is from Russia. Her name is Maria Sharapova.
Who is your favourite star? Is he or she from the United States?
Write soon. Gabriella
Checking-up the table.
Reading in chain.
Question on the letter:
What’s the name of the girl who writes the letter?
Where’s she from?
Who’s the her favourite film star?
Is her favourite sports star from Russia?
Grammar: Verb ‘be’.
Affirmative sentence:
I am Russian. We are from Kazkhstan.
You are Turkish. You are from Great Britain.
He\She\It is Kazakh. They are from Russia.
Negative sentences:
I am not from Turkey. We are not British.

He\She\It is not Argentian. They are not Polish.
Interrogative sentences:

Is your favourite film star from the States? - Yes, he is.
Writing.
In order to consolidate the grammar let’s do the following exercise. Here you see some famous people. You have the names of them and the countries which they are from. You need to change the name of countries into the names of nationalities and make up sentences.
Example: Felis\Turkey
Felis is Turkish.
Jessica Alba\America.
Dima Bilan\Russia.
Karakhat\Kazakhstan.
Our next task is also to make up sentences but here we are to use two forms of the sentences: affirmative and negative. If you do not know the nationalities you can use your mini-dictionary.
Example: Brad Pitt\Russia\Great Britain
Brad Pitt isn’t Russian. He is British.
Shakira\Mexico\Colombia.
Maria Sharapova\Ukraine\Russia.
Relaxation time: T: I think all of you are a bit tired. Now let’s stand up and do some physical exercises. Clap left, clap right, clap up, clap down.Look left, look right, look up, look down. Turn round, sit down, touch something brown
Well, I see that you’ve understood the usage of the verb’be. And in order to make a conclusion of everything you’ve learnt during the lesson I want you to write a letter to Gabriella answering her questions about your favourite film, sports and pop stars. I will give you five minutes to write a letter to your new penfriend.
Time’s up. Let’s check. (two or three pupils read their letters)
Home task. Conclusion. Evaluation.
And now instead of just saying ‘goodbye’, let’s sing a song. (pupils listen to the song ‘Goodbye to you’, then they sing together)
Boys and girls,
How are you?
I’m sad, I’m sad,
I’m sad too.
Boys and girls,
How are you?
Good-bye, good-bye,
Good-bye to you.
