The United Kingdom

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated off the north – west coast of Europe between the Atlantic Ocean in the north – west and the North Sea in the east.

• London’s population is over 7 million people. The British nation consists of the English, the Scots, the Welsh and the Irish. There are many people of all colours and races in the United Kingdom.

Climate

• The climate of Great Britain is mild. It is not too hot in summer or too cold in winter. It often rains in England. Rain falls in summer and in winter, in autumn and in spring. Snow falls only in the north and west of the country.

• Климат Великобритании умеренный. Летом здесь не жарко, зимой не холодно. В Англии часто идут дожди. Ливни бывают летом и зимой, осенью и весной. Снег выпадает только на севере и западе страны.

Relief

• England and Ireland are flat, yet Scotland and Wales are mountainous.

• Англия и Ирландия плоские, Шотландия и Уэльс гористые.

Beautiful villages

• Many parts of the country have beautiful villages.

• Во многих частях страны есть красивые деревни.

Rivers

• There are many rivers in Great Britain. The main river is the Thames. Many ships and barges go up and down the river. The longest river is the Severn. It is 350 kilometers long.

• В Великобритании много рек. Главная река Темза. Много кораблей и барж поднимаются вверх и спускаются вниз по реке. Самая длинная река Северн. Ее длина 350 км.

Sights of London

• There are many universities, collages, libraries, museums and theatres in the country. The most famous universities are Cambridge University, Oxford University, Glasgow University.

• В стране много университетов, колледжей, библиотек, музеев и театров. Самые знаменитые университеты Кембриджский, Оксфордский, университет Глазго.

British Parliament

• The UK is a parliamentary monarchy. The British Parliament consists of two Houses: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The Prime Minister is the head of the government.

• Соединенное Королевство – парламентская монархия. Британский Парламент состоит из двух Палат: Палаты Лордов и Палаты Общин. Премьер Министр – глава государства.

Mineral resources

• The United Kingdom has some mineral resources. Coal and oil are the most important of them.

• Соединенное Королевство богато полезными ископаемыми. Уголь и нефть самые важные из них.

Industry

• The United Kingdom is one of the world’s most industrialized countries. The main industrial centers are Sheffield, Birmingham and Manchester.

• Соединенное Королевство является одной из высоко развитых промышленных стран мира. Главные промышленные центры – Шеффилд, Бирмингем, Манчестер.

Largest cities

• The largest cities of the country are London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Manchester, Glasgow, Belfast, Dublin.

• Крупнейшие города страны Лондон, Бирмингем, Кардифф, Манчестер, Глазго, Белфаст, Дублин.

Agriculture

• Agriculture is an important sector of the economy of the country. The British people grow wheat, fruit, vegetables, oats.

• Сельское хозяйство является важным сектором экономики страны. Британцы выращивают пшеницу, фрукты, овощи, овес.
