Конспект урока "Survive"

Hello, friends!

Imagine that you’re going camping or on a mountain hike, for example. What things are you going to take with you? Look at the pictures of some of them and find the words.

OK, now let’s check your guesses.

There are some letters left in a line. Can you make up a word from these letters?

Right you are! The key word is SURVIVE!

In the lesson today we’re going to talk about useful tips for survival in extreme situations.

You’ll also learn and practice phrases with GET.

And finally, you’ll know the position of too, also and as well in the sentence.

Look at the photos. How can each situation be dangerous or scary?

These words may be helpful to answer the questions: to hit, to kill, to fall, to die, allergy, to lose your way, wild animals.

Complete the sentences to make phrases with GET with the following words:

hot, wet, hungry, thirsty, lost, sunburnt, warm, stung, tired, cold.

Now check, please.

1. When I go to the gym in summer I get hot.

2. I didn’t drink anything all day so I got thirsty.

3. I stayed up too late and I got really tired.

4. I forgot my umbrella yesterday and I got wet.

5. I’m really cold. Can I sit by the fire? I need to get warm.

6. I didn’t eat breakfast so I’m getting hungry.

7. I didn’t have a map or my mobile and I got lost.

8. I put my hand on a bee and I got stung.

9. There is no central heating and I often get cold.

10. I stayed out in the sun and I got sunburnt.

Think of your own situations using so and one of get phrases.

For example: I was out in New York. I didn’t have my navigator or a map, so I got lost.

Ready?

Now Student A: read your sentence but stop after so. Other students: guess the get phrase.

The verb GET has more than twenty meanings in English!

It can mean “become”, “arrive”, “obtain”, “buy” and is in many phrases, e.g.: get up, get on a plane, get dressed, etc.

How many meanings does GET have in expressions: get hot, wet, hungry, thirsty, lost, sunburnt, warm, stung, tired, cold?

Only one: become.

Which meanings does GET have in these phrases: get home, get a job, get a new car, get to the airport, get a new haircut, get some chocolate, get better?

So, the meaning “become” has the phrase – get better.

Get home, get to the airport mean “arrive”.

Get a job, get a new haircut, get some chocolate mean “obtain”.

And the meaning “buy” has the phrase – get a new car.

Nature is beautiful, but it also can be dangerous. Are you ready for nature’s little surprises? See how you do with these questions?

1. You are out walking, high up on a hill. There are a few trees and an open field below. Your car is five minutes away. Your mobile is in your pocket. A storm starts and there is lightning. What do you do?

2. You are at home and there is an earthquake. What do you do? And what do you do if you’re in a car?

3. You are in a garden and you put your hand on a bee. You get stung on your arm. There are other bees nearby. What do you do?

4. You are out walking in a forest and you get lost. It’s getting dark and there’s no signal on your mobile. What do you do?

Well, now you have a chance to check whether your ideas were right or not?

How to stay safe near lightning?

First, get down from the hill – high places are dangerous. Don’t stand under trees because lightning often hits trees. In the open field, don’t lie down on the ground. Put your feet together, then crouch down. Don’t put your hands on the ground. Stay away from metal – never use a mobile phone or an umbrella when there is lightning near you. You’ll be safe inside your car, if you can get to it – lightning goes around cars. But don’t touch anything metal in the car.

What to do if you get stung by a bee?

First, move away from the other bees – they might sting you too. When a bee stings you, don’t pinch the sting with your fingers or it will get worse.

Use your credit card and push the sting out. Then wash your arm with soap and water and raise it above your heart for a short time. You can put an ice pack on your arm and also take some painkillers. If you still have problems, go and see your doctor.

How to be safe in an earthquake?

Stay inside. Get under a strong table or desk and hold onto the furniture. Stay away from windows and mirrors because they might break. Stay away from bookshelves too. They might fall on you. If you are in bed, stay there and put a pillow over your head. Do not run outside. A building might fall on you. If you’re in a car, drive away from buildings, bridges and trees and stay in your car. Wait until the end of the earthquake before you leave your car.

What to do if you get lost in a forest?

First, stay calm, stay in one place and make a plan. A plan will help you to feel better. Build a simple shelter and make a fire so you can get warm and feel safer as well. Also remember that water is the most important thing, so look for water, but don’t move far away from the starting place or you might get more lost. And don’t be surprised about the mobile – in a forest a mobile often won’t work because there is no signal.

Look at the cartoon and answer the questions.

What happened to the plane? Why did it crash?

How are the people from the plane feeling?

What problems might they have?

Choose three objects from the box that might help the people from the plane.

Give reasons for your choice:

chocolate / a radio / a box of matches / a mobile phone / sun cream / a knife / a bottle of water / playing cards / compass / clothes / boots / bandages / antiseptic cream

For example: I think a bottle of water is useful because they might get thirsty.

Look at the sentences. What is the position of too, also and as well in these sentences?

1. Fish is your most important food and it’s also easy to catch.

2. Stay away from windows and mirrors, and bookshelves too.

3. Build a simple shelter and make a fire so you can get warm and feel safer as well.

Also is used before a main verb but after the verb to be.

Too and as well are used at the end of the sentence.

Put too, also and as well into the story. Use each word/phrase once.

We walked all morning and we walked for five hours in the afternoon, too. We had a short break for lunch. We stopped for a rest in the afternoon. In the evening, Michel taught us how to kill a snake and how to cook it. I didn’t like the smell, but I ate some and Michel ate some.

The suggested answers for this task are the following…

Finish the story with your own ideas. Don’t forget to use too, also and as well.

Well, guys, we did a great job!

I’m sure, now you’re really good at dealing with extreme situations and won’t be confused if necessary.
