Animals need our help

Animals need our help"

Hello, boys and girls! My name is Bobby.

And my name is Tobby. This is our friend Mobby.

Welcome to our lesson.

Today we have a guest.

It’s a bear.

His name is Marti.

Hello, everyone.

Marti, what brought you here today?

Guys, I came to you, because I need your help!

What kind of help do you need?

Well… My relatives, friends and I are looking for a place where we can live together. And we have no ideas where we can go. Boys, is there any places for animals?

Oh, yes, of course!

There are lots of places where you can go and where you will be treated with love and respect.

Oh, really?

Yes, it’s true!

Marti, have you ever heard anything about such organization as the World Wildlife Fund?

No, I haven’t! What does this organization do?

Marti, we will tell you about this organization in a few minutes.

Okay.

So today in the lesson we will:

discuss what the World Wildlife Fund does;

talk about national parks;

And

talk about nature reserves.

All right! Let’s start!

First of all, we will tell you about the World Wildlife Fund.

Great!

The World Wildlife Fund is an international organization which helps to save the wildlife on our planet. It was founded on the 11th of September in 1961.

Its original logo, the black-and-white panda, was created by Peter Scott. This man was one of the founders of the World Wildlife Fund.

The other founders of this organization are Julian Huxley, Prince Bernhard, Max Nicholson, Guy Mountfort, Prince Phillip and Godfrey Anderson Rockefeller.

The World Wildlife Fund works in 100 countries. And it’s supported by more than one million members in the United States and close to five million globally.

Marti, this organization helps to save wild animals.

I think we should contact them and ask for advice.

Oh, that’s a wonderful idea!

Let’s visit their website and find their phone number.

Oh, look! Their phone number is 1-873-478-6325.

Let’s call them right now.

Good afternoon. Thank you for calling “World Wildlife Fund”.

Brian Woodrow speaking. How can I help you?

Hello, Mr. Woodrow. My name is Mobby.

And I have some friends who are looking for a place to live.

Oh, okay. And who are your friends?

My friends are brown bears.

Well… In this case, I have two offers for you.

Oh, I’m so happy to hear that! And what are your offers?

Well… Your friends can live in one of our national parks, or they can live in one of our nature reserves.

Wow! Both variants are so good. Thank you for the information.

You’re welcome.

Mr. Woodrow, can I call you later? I want to discuss your offers with my friends.

Sure. No problem.

Bye, Mr. Woodrow.

Bye, Mobby.

Mobby, what did Mr. Woodrow tell you?

Well… He said that you can live in one of their national parks or in one of their nature reserves.

Oh, I don’t even know what these word combinations mean.

Don’t worry! We will explain everything to you!

A national park is a large area of land which is protected by the government because of its natural beauty, plants or animals.

The first national parks were created in the United States of America in the 19th century. Currently, the USA has over 60 national parks in all parts of the country.

Canada also has a series of national parks which protect the beautiful landscapes of the Rocky Mountains. Banff and Jasper National Parks have high mountains, lakes and beautiful rivers with a population of grizzly bears, deer and mountain goats.

National parks in eastern and southern Africa protect exotic animals. Kruger National Park in South Africa is one of Africa’s largest reserves. It is home to thousands of buffaloes, elephants, lions, giraffes and many bird species.

Russia also has a series of national parks. There are 33 national parks in this country where you can find different kinds of animals.

Today there are thousands of national parks around the world. Their main aim is to protect the wild animals from exploitation and keep them in the wild where they belong.

Marti, we’ve told you about national parks.

Did you understand everything?

Oh, yes, I did! Now, boys, could you tell me about nature reserves?

Sure! No problem!

A nature reserve is an area of land that is protected in order to keep safe the animals and plants that live there, often because they are rare.

Boys, nature reserves also protect the animals! Am I right?

Yes, you are absolutely right!

Erm… In this case, I don’t understand anything! Guys, what’s the difference between a nature reserve and a national park?

Oh, don’t worry! We will tell you!

The difference between a nature reserve and a national park is that nature reserves are usually smaller, and their main aim is to protect the nature.

Now, Marti, we will tell you about some of the best nature reserves in the world.

Oh, cool! I can’t wait to hear about them.

Look! This is the Australian Great Barrier Reef. It is the world’s largest marine reserve. The Australian Great Barrier Reef is home and shelter to thousands of animal and vegetable species.

And this is American Praire Reserve. This reserve appeared when the first explorers went to the West and found millions of bison. Unfortunately, today this reserve includes only a few thousands of individuals.

Now look! This is Northeast Greenland National Park. It’s the world’s largest nature reserve with 900,000 square kilometers, most of them covered by ice.

Marti, that’s all! Did you understand all the information?

Yes, I did! Guys, thank you so much for your help!

You’re welcome, Marti!

Boys, you are the best! Now I have to run! I want to tell my friends and relatives about all the places where we can live! I’m so excited!

Ha-ha. Okay. Bye, Marti!

Bye, boys!

That’s all for today, our dear friends.

See you soon.
