When do we use the Future Simple Tense?

We use the Future Simple Tense to describe single actions, which will happen in the future.

For example:

Ella and Maddison will spend their holidays in London.

We can use this tense to take decisions or make promises at the moment of speaking.

For instance:

Emily, look! It’s raining. I will take an umbrella.

The Future Simple Tense can be used to talk about requests.

For example:

Jordan, will you help me carry this toy box?

This tense is used when we think, suspect or guess that something will happen in the future. In these sentences we can use such words as “think”, “believe”, “expect”, “be sure”, “be afraid”, etc.

For instance:

I think Mason will be a vet. He likes animals.

Now let’s answer the following question:

How do we form sentences in the Future Simple Tense?

To form positive sentences we put the subject in the first place. Then we put the auxiliary verb “will”. After that we use the base form of the verb.

Look at the examples:

Christopher will go to school tomorrow.

Or

Nick and Lora will play basketball on Sunday.

To form negative sentences we put the subject in the first place. Then we use the word “will” with the particle “not”. The short form is “won’t”. After that we put the base form of the verb.

For instance:

Jennifer will not (or won’t) go for a swim today.

Or

Jake and his dad will not (or won’t) eat pizza for dinner.

To form questions we put the word “will” in the first place. Then we put the subject. After that we need to use the base form of the verb.

Look at the examples:

Will Harrison fly to Australia tomorrow?

Or

Will Donna buy a new mobile phone next week?

To give short answers to the questions we can use one of the following two constructions:

The first construction is…

In the first place we put the word “yes”. Then we use the personal pronoun. After that we need to put the auxiliary verb “will”.

And the second construction is…

In the first place we put the word “no”. Then we use the personal pronoun. After that we need to put the auxiliary verb “will” with the particle “not”.
