— Hello, boys and girls!

— Today we have a guest.

— Hello, everyone! It’s so good to see you.
— Hello, Benjamin. It’s so good to see you too.
— All right! Now when everyone is here, we can start our lesson.
Today in the lesson we will:
● learn the definition of the term “a modal verb”;
● talk about the modal verb “must”;
● learn new words;
And
● put the knowledge into practice.
First of all, you need to know that…
A modal verb is a verb that is usually used to express necessity, possibility, obligation, duty, permission and so on. Modal verbs need to be accompanied by another main verbs.
Look at the examples:
Christopher can swim like a fish.
Or
I should see a doctor. I have a terrible headache.
(In these sentences we used the modal verbs “can” and “should”, which are accompanied by the main verbs “swim” and “see”).
Now let’s talk about the modal verb “must”.
It’s translated as:
Должен, обязан
The negative form of the verb “must” is “mustn’t”.
Не должен, нельзя
For instance:
Stephanie, you must make your bed!
Or
Kyle, you mustn’t use your brother’s computer without his permission.
Now let’s answer the following question:
When do we use the modal verb “must” or “mustn’t”?
We use the modal verb “must” to talk about duty.
For instance:
Bobby, you must always listen to your parents!
The modal verb “must” is used to express strong obligation.
For example:
You must stop when the traffic lights turn red.
“Must” is also used to give emphatic advice or make recommendations.
For instance:
You must listen to Ella’s new song. It’s great!
We can use the modal verb “must” to express necessity.
For example:
Kylie, I must talk to you about the new project.
“Must” is also used to give orders firmly or positively.
For instance:
Zoe, you must go to sleep right now!
We use the modal verb “mustn’t” to talk about rules.
For example:
You mustn’t make noise after 9 o’clock!
“Mustn’t” is also used to forbid someone to do something.
For instance:
Julia, you mustn’t touch the paintings.
— Benjamin, we’ve told you about the modal verb “must”.

This is Fiona.
She has just written a letter to her friend Leslie.
Let’s read this letter.
“Hi Leslie,
How are you? I had a wonderful weekend.
I went to the cinema on Friday night with my sister. We watched the film “San Andreas”. It’s an action film starring Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino and Alexandra Daddario. The plot of this film is really interesting! It’s about the biggest earthquake in the history. Dwayne Johnson plays Ray Gaines, a helicopter rescue pilot for the Los Angeles Fire Department, who is trying to find his daughter Blake in the chaos. Ray’s ex-wife Emma is forced to turn to Ray for help as he is her last resort. Together they journey to save their daughter. I found the film exciting and the acting was wonderful! Leslie, I know that you prefer watching comedies and horror films, but you must watch “San Andreas”! Don’t miss it! How about you? Have you seen any interesting films recently?
With love,
Fiona”
