Prepositions. Asking and giving directions

Prepositions. Asking and giving directions"

Hi, guys!

We’re going to Brighton soon.

Just 80 km south of London on England’s south coast it is a great place to visit. Brighton is one of the most exciting cities in Britain – with its fantastic shopping, good-value restaurants, great arts and music and famous beach and pier – it’s a popular place to visit or stay. It has even got its very own royal palace, the exotic Royal Pavilion.

Would you like to go there?

Kristie has chosen a place for us to stay in Brighton. Listen to her telephone conversation and look at the map of Brighton.

When is our holiday?

·                   Hello, Craven Holiday Homes, can I help you?

·                   Oh, hello, I’m phoning about your advert for Benton House. Is it available in September?

·                   Yes, it is? When would you like to stay there?

·                   From September 14th for a week.

·                   Er, yes. Would you like to book it?

·                   Yes, please.

·                   Can I have your name, please?

·                   Yes, my name’s Kristine Daniels.

·                   And do you have an email address, Miss Daniels?

·                   Yes, it’s daniels at gmail dot com ([email protected])

·                   Right. I’ll email you directions. It’s very easy to find.

·                   Thank you very much.

In the lesson today you’ll revise places in town and some prepositions of place and movement.

You’ll also learn to ask for and give directions.

Aha, here we have an email from Craven Holiday Homes with directions.

Let’s read it, look at the map and draw the route from You are here to our holiday home. Which number is the holiday home on the map?

Dear Miss Daniels,

Thank you for booking one of our holiday homes. Here are your directions.

When you come into the city you’re on Western Road. Go along this street past the Clock Tower on the left, then go over the bridge and turn right into North Street. Then go past the Royal Pavilion on your left. Go down North Street until the end and turn left. Then go along Grand Parade for about 100 metres and take the first right. The Benton House is on the left, next to a small car park.

I hope you and your friends have a wonderful holiday.

Best wishes,

Susan Craven

Check your road. Which number is the holiday home on the map?

It’s number 3.

Look at the map and listen. Which four places are we going to?

1. Go along Russel road and it’s on the right, opposite to the library.

- Right, Maddie is in the Shopping Center.

2. Go along Prince Albert Street, past the Brighton Square and it’s on the right, next to the Tourist Information Center.

- Aha, Martin went to the Town Hall.

3. Go up Preston Street and take the second right. It’s on the left, next to the bookshop.

I’m in the Internet Café.

4. Do down West Street until the end. Then turn left and go along King’s Road. It’s on the left, opposite the bus station. You can’t miss it.

And Kristie decided to go to the Pier.

So, my friends got to different places in Brighton. We agreed to meet at the Internet café at 6 p.m. They try to get here asking for directions.

Put each conversation in order.

1.

Maddie: Excuse me. Is there an Internet café near here?

Stranger: Yes, there is one in Regency Road.

Maddie: How can I get there?

Stranger: Go along this road and turn into Preston Street. Take the first right and the café is on the left, opposite the chemist’s.

Maddie: Thank you very much.

2.

Martin: Excuse me. Could you tell me the way to the Internet café?

Stranger: Oh, it’s quite far from here. OK. Go up Prince Albert Street past the park, turn into Ship Street and go along for 100 meters. Then turn left into Duke Street and go along until the end. Finally, cross West Street and you will see the café at the corner.

Martin: Great. Thanks a lot.

3.

Kristie: Excuse me. Where is the Internet café?

Stranger: Go along Kings Road past the Fishing Museum. Turn right into West Street. Go along and take the second left. It’s next to the bookshop. You can’t miss it.

Kristie: Thanks.

Stranger: No problem.

They used these phrases to ask for directions? Fill in the gaps.

Excuse me. Is there an Internet café near here?

How can I get there?

Could you tell me the way to the Internet café?

Where is the Internet café?

We need these phrases to give directions. Fill in the gaps.

Go along Kings Road.

Go past the Fishing Museum.

Turn left/right into Duke Street.

Take the first/second right/left.

The café is on the left/right.

It’s opposite the chemist’s.

It’s next to the bookshop.

If you can’t give directions, you say:

Sorry, I don’t know.

Sorry, I don’t live around here.

Now it’s time to practice. Choose the places from the box. Write directions to them from the Clock Tower.

the Royal Pavilion

the Museum and Art Gallery

the swimming pool

Church Street car park

the Theatre Royal

Tommy: Hi, guys! Was is difficult to get in here?

Maddie: No, it wasn’t.

Tommy: It’s important to know how to ask and give directions if you want to feel comfortable in a new city or to be helpful to the tourists in the place where you live.
