Do and make are both translated as “делать”. That is why they often confuse students. Оба глагола переводятся как «делать». Именно поэтому учащиеся так часто их путают. And here are some rules which will prevent you from mixing them. Ниже мы приводим некоторые правила, которые помогут вам их не путать.

Do is used when we speak about work, jobs and tasks. Глагол do используется, когда мы говорим о работе, профессии или каком-либо задании. Pay attention that we do not create anything we can touch (no physical object)! Обратите внимание, что при этом мы не производим, не создаем того, что можно потрогать (то есть, никаких физических объектов)!

Mum, I`ve done the homework. May I go out?

Yes, of course, but only after you do the housework, honey!  Мам, я уже сделал домашнее задание. Можно мне на улицу. – Конечно, милый, но только после того, как сделаешь работу по дому.

I can`t do this task. It`s too difficult for me. Не могу выполнить это задание. Оно слишком сложное для меня.

Sam likes doing crosswords. It`s the thing he`s really good at. Сэм любит решать кроссворды. В этом он по-настоящему хорош.

And make, on the contrary, is used to speak about creating, producing or building something new. А вот глагол make, наоборот, используется, когда мы говорим о создании, производстве или при строении чего-либо нового. Look at these examples:

Ann makes wonderful dresses. She`s a fashion designer. (Ann creates dresses, she produces them.) Аня делает великолепные платья. Она дизайнер. Аня создает, она их производит.

And of course, we use make speaking about food of any kind: И, конечно же, мы используем глагол make, когда говорим про любую еду:

I can make a cake in one hour.

Could you make a cup of coffee, please?

My mum makes best pizzas on earth.

We`ve got more cases to discuss:

Do is used when we speak about actions in general, not naming them. Such words as ‘thing, something, anything, nothing, everything and others are often used in this case. Do используется, если мы говорим о действиях в общем, не называя их. В таких ситуациях мы часто используем слова:  ‘thing, something, anything, nothing, everything и другие. Let`s read the given examples:

I`m lack of time. I`ve got so many things to do. У меня не хватает времени. А мне столько еще предстоит сделать! Things to do.

Why are you doing nothing? Do something to help me, please! Почему ты ничего не делаешь? Сделай, пожалуйста, хоть что-то, чтобы помочь мне! Do nothing, do something.

The verb make is used when we speak about our plans, some decisions, with nouns connected with speech or sounds. А вот глагол make мы используем еще и в тех случаях, когда говорим  о своих планах, решениях, с существительными связанными с речью или звуками.

Look at the following examples:

I can`t make a speech in front of all these people. – Я не могу произнести речь перед всеми этими людьми. Make a speech – произнести речь.

Who is making all this noise? Кто так сильно шумит? to make noise – производить шум, или попросту – шуметь.

I`ve made my choice – I`m going to Britain, not France. Я сделал выбор – еду в Британию, а не во Францию.

And a little bit more of theory.

We also use the verb ‘do’ when we want to replace another verb when its meaning is clear to us. Еще мы используем глагол когда хотим заменить другой глагол, чье значение нам понятно, ясно из контекста. Look here:

Can you do the dishes, please? What can we do with these dirty dishes? – We can wash them. (Here do is used in the meaning wash.) Здесь глагол do используется в значении «мыть».

Mum, pick up the phone, please. I`m doing my hair. (Here the verb ‘do’ is used in the meaning ‘brush’ расчесывать.)

·       Sally, can you make our favourite pie for dinner, please?

·       Of course I`ll do it. 

Have a look at this very example. The verb make is used speaking about food: make a pie. But in respond we`ve used I`ll do it because it is vivid what the girls are speaking about – about making a pie. – Посмотрите на данный пример. Здесь мы употребили глагол make, говоря о еде -  приготовить пирог. Но в ответе мы использовали I`ll do it, так как действие, которое мы заменили на глагол do – очевидно: девочки говорят о приготовлении пирога.  And not to use the verb ‘make’ twice, we can replace it with ‘do’. И для того, чтобы не употреблять глагол make во второй раз, мы заменили его на ‘do’.

And we have to mention that the verb ‘make’ is used to speak about the origin or the material of something. Также необходимо заметить, что глагол make используется, когда мы говорим о происхождении или материале чего-либо. Look here:

I`m sure these watches were definitely made in Switzerland! Уверен, эти часы сделаны в Швейцарии.

This house is made of bricks. Этот дом сделан кирпича.

Don`t forget that we often don`t translate the verb do. In this case it has the function of an auxiliary verb. И не забудьте, что часто мы не переводим глагол do вообще. В таком случае он употреблен в функции вспомогательного глагола. Look at the following examples to revise it.

Do you like travelling? ты любишь путешествовать? Do helps to build a question in the Present Simple tense. Do помогает в данном случае образовать вопрос в настоящем простом времени.

He didn`t take part in the IEC last year. Он не принимал участие в международном клубе путешественников в прошлом году. Here, do in its past form ‘did’ is used to build a negative sentence in the Past Simple tense. We don`t translate it. We translate only take part in – принимать участие.

Don`t mix it! Не перепутайте!

And one more case when we use the verb make: if we force somebody do something. Если мы заставляем кого-либо сделать что-либо. Look:

My brother makes me do my homework every day. Мой брат заставляет меня делать домашнее задание каждый день. Makes me do – заставляет меня делать.

It`s not my fault. He made me throw the stone! Это не моя вина! Это он заставил меня бросить камень! Made me throw - заставил меня бросить.

It was a long rule but I think it`s not that difficult. Now I can do a test to see whether I`ve remembered everything.

We have to remember that there are many expressions with these verbs and we`d better learn them by heart. Here are some of them: do a favour – оказать услугу, do your best – стараться изо всех сил, do exercises – делать упражнения, заниматься, do good – приносить пользу, do business – делать дело, вести дела.

Make an excuse – извиняться, make money – зарабатывать деньги, make a mistake – сделать ошибку, make noise – шуметь, make plans – строить планы, and others.

Now we have to complete the sentences with ‘do’ or ‘make’.

The first situation:

What are you doing/making? – Don`t worry. I`m just doing/making your favourite chocolate cake.

   In the first case we use do because here we`ve an activity in its general meaning. В первом случае мы употребляем глагол do, так как у нас здесь употребляется деятельность в общем смысле: – What are you doing? Что ты делаешь? I`m just making your favourite chocolate cake, because we speak about food. Я всего-лишь готовлю твой любимый шоколадный торт. Употребляем глагол make, так как говорим о еде.

Dad, are you good at doing or making crosswords?

  So as a crossword is a task, we have to use ‘do’. Так как кроссворд – это задание, то мы употребляем do. Are you good at doing crosswords.  – Ты хорошо решаешь кроссворды?

And the last sentence:

The chairmen of the club have already done/made plans for the future session.

     In this case we choose make in the form made because we speak about plans and decisions. Мы употребляем в данном случае глагол make, в форме made, так как мы говорим о планах и решениях.
