A day in a British secondary school.

Kirill: I’m still here, in Britain. And today I’d like to tell you about secondary schools in the UK. Hope, you`ll find this information useful.

Do you remember that after taking SATs at the end of primary school British children go to secondary school. Children are usually 11 years old at this moment.

So, we are going to a secondary school, too. А сейчас и мы идем в одну из средних школ.

Kirill: Oh, look: who`s that? It`s interesting to know that this profession is called a lollipop man or a lollipop lady.

Have you heard of such a profession?  Он – лоллипопмен. Слышали о такой профессии? Look at the sign in his hand. Any ideas? This sign resembles a lollipop. Этот знак напоминает леденец на палочке – a lollipop. That’s why this profession has such a name. A lollipop man or a lollipop lady (the real name of the profession is ‘a school crossing patrol officer’) is a person who helps children to cross the road near schools. Лолли поп мэн или же лолли поп леди – настоящее название профессии – дежурный, регулирующие движение транспорта – это человек, который помогает детям переходить дорогу вблизи школ.

Kirill: And now we are at a British secondary school.

It is usually a two- or three-storeyed building with a big sports ground and many different classrooms.

Let’s look into some of them. Guess what subjects these classrooms are for.

Kirill: It`s vivid, that this classroom is for Mathematics. British Students often call this subject maths.

 Kirill: another door is opening: … Do you recognize this classroom?  Узнаете этот кабинет? It`s an ICT classroom. ICT means information computer technology. In Russian it’s simply информатика.

Kirill:  And another classroom. Oh, it`s not a classroom. It is an Assembly Hall. Это – актовый зал. But what lesson is it used for? …

Drama. Drama is translated урок театрального мастерства. Drama is considered to be a very important subject in British schools because it involves students in communication. Этот урок считают очень важным в британских школах, так как он вовлекают учащихся в общение.

HAMLET: To be, or not to be-that is the question:

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer

The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune

Or to take arms against a sea of troubles

And by opposing end them. To die, to sleep-

No more-and by a sleep to say we end

The heartache, and the thousand natural shocks

That flesh is heir to.

British students have Design and technology lessons.

Kirill:  It`s interesting to know that … Design and Technology lessons cover such topics as woodwork, metalwork, cookery, etc. У британских школьников есть уроки дизайна и технологии, которые покрывают такие сферы, как работа по дереву и металлу,  а также - кулинарию. Both girls and boys have cookery classes. They master many different meals and learn a range of cooking techniques including baking. И девочки, и мальчики овладевают многими блюдами, а также изучают разнообразные техники приготовления, включая выпекание.

Look at these students’ clothes. They all look alike. Посмотрите на одежду этих учеников. Они все выглядят похоже.  It happens because students have to wear school uniform in most British schools. Many schools have school uniform of particular colours and parents can buy it straight from school. У многих британских школ форма имеет определенные цвета, и родители могут купить ее прямо в школе.

Kirill: Do you hear the bell? It means that the first lesson’s just started. When do lessons usually begin in British secondary schools? At nine a.m.

I know where we can go while all the students are busy… to the school canteen. в школьную столовую – school canteen.

………Smells delicious. Canteen – столовая. Children have their school lunch in here during their lunch break from 12 to 1 p.m. For lunch today they are having: homemade pizza, half a jacked potato, peas and sweetcorn medley with tomato sauce and a tub of ice-cream for dessert. Итак, сегодня на обед у них будет: домашняя пицца, половина картофеля, запеченного в мундире, горошек вперемешку с кукурузой, томатный соус и стаканчик мороженого на десертJ

If you don`t like school food, you may bring your packed lunch with you. Если вам не нравится школьная еда, вы можете принести еду с собой – packed lunch.

After lunch British students have enough time to play on the sports ground. They usually play football, basketball, badminton and other active games.

After the lunch break there`s usually two or three more lessons and the school day is finished. 

Did you know that British students study the same subjects only till the end of year 9 of studies. Then they choose about 8-11 subjects to study deeper for years 10 and 11. Ученики в Британии изучают одинаковые предметы лишь до конца 9 года обучения. Затем, они выбирают 8-11 предметов (на 10 и 11 годы обучения) и изучают их более углубленно.

They do it because at the end of year 11 students in Britain have very important examinations in these subjects: GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education). А затем, в конце 11 года обучения сдают очень важные экзамены: GCSE, чтобы получить Сертификат об общем среднем образовании. And this is the very end of British compulsory education. Это и есть окончание обязательного образования в Британии.

It is interesting to know that … If somebody wants to continue studying, he or she can spend two more years at school. These years are called “Sixth form”. Если кто-то хочет продолжить учебу, то можно провести еще два года в школе. Эти годы носят название – шестой класс.

In Sixth form students usually study 5 subjects in the first year, and 3 subjects in the 2^nd one. В так называемом шестом классе ученики обычно изучают 5 предметов на выбор в первый год и три, - во второй год обучения. They study these subjects very profoundly to be able to move on to University. И они, изучают их углубленно, чтобы затем иметь возможность поступить в университет. After these two years of hard work students take A-levels or Advanced level examinations in these 3 subjects – после усердной двухгодовой работы, ученики сдают A-levels, что значит - экзамен по программе средней школы на повышенном уровне по этим трем предметам.

Kirill: Have you heard the name of Joanne Rowling? Joanne Rowling (the  author of Harry Potter) with her family lives in Edinburgh at the moment. And this school is George Heriot`s school in Edinburgh. Heriot’s – Hogwarts, they sound very alike, don’t they? Heriot’s и Hogwarts звучат очень похоже, не правда ли? They say that Heriot’s is the very prototype of Hogwarts – the school of wizardry and witchcraft. Говорят, что школа Хериотс в Эдинбурге (столице Шотландии) является тем самым прототипом школы Хогвартс – школы колдовства и ведьмовских чар.
