Asking for, giving and refusing permission

Урок 19. Английский язык 4 класс ФГОС

В ходе этого урока ребята узнают, что хорошо воспитанные люди всегда спрашивают разрешение перед тем, как что-то взять или что-то сделать. Учащиеся рассмотрят основные конструкции, которые они смогут использовать для того, чтобы спрашивать, давать или отказывать в разрешении. Далее ребятам будет предложено прослушать 6 диалогов и подобрать ответную реплику к каждому из них.

Конспект урока "Asking for, giving and refusing permission"

Hello, boys and girls! My name is Bobby.

And my name is Tobby. This is our friend Mobby.

Welcome to our lesson.

Today we have a guest.

It’s a squirrel.

Hello, everyone. My name is Daisy.

So what brought you here, Daisy?

Guys, I came here, because I need your help!

What kind of help do you need?

Well… Listen to my story and you’ll understand everything.

Yesterday I met my friend Goofy. He looked so happy! When we came closer to each other, we started talking.

Hi, Daisy!

Hi, Goofy!

Daisy, I’m going to make a party tomorrow! Will you be able to come?

Yes, of course! Thank you for your invitation! I’ll come with a great pleasure!

Great! I’m glad to hear that!

I like parties! I will invite Grace and Megan!

Erm, Daisy…

And I will take balloons! Lots of balloons! I will also take cookies and sweets with me!

Daisy!

Oh, I’m sorry! I’m just so excited! What did you want to say to me?

Daisy, it’s my party! And it’s really rude of you to invite people to my party without my permission!

What? We are friends! Why do I have to ask for permission?

It’s true! We are friends! But it doesn’t give you a right to do everything you want.

Oh, okay! In this case, I won’t to your party! Bye, Goofy!

Bye, Daisy!

After that I ran away!

Boys, I’ve heard that you are very smart! That’s why I’ve decided to come here and ask you for advice. I don’t want to lose my friend, but he is wrong in this situation!

All right, Daisy! But our words will probably make you angry!

Oh, okay! I’m ready!

Daisy, your friend is right!

I agree! It’s his party! You needed to ask his permission to invite Grace and Megan.

Yeah, you also needed to ask his permission to take balloons, sweets and cookies with you.

Really? It means that I’m wrong in this situation! But I don’t even know how to ask for permission.

Don’t worry, Daisy! We will tell you how to do that!

Great! Thank you, boys!

Now I think you understand that today in the lesson we will:

learn how to ask for, give and refuse permission;

And

put the knowledge into practice.

First of all, let’s answer the question “Why do we have to ask for permission?”.

The answer is very simple:

When we ask for permission, we demonstrate that we are well-mannered people!

For example:

You need to get permission to do something at work.

You need to ask your friend for permission if you want to use one of his possessions, such as a phone, a book, a pen, etc.

You also need to ask the teacher if you can leave the room for a moment or two.

And so on.

It’s very polite to ask for permission before doing something or taking someone else’s things!

We’ve told you why we need to ask for permission.

Now let’s discuss how we can do that!

To ask for permission, we can use the following construction:

In the first place we put the word “may”, after that we use the personal pronoun. Personal pronoun – личное местоимение. Then we need to use the base form of the verb.

Let’s look at the following two examples:

The 1st example:

Alvin, the cheese is so delicious!

Oh, I agree, Butler!

Alvin, may I have some more, please?

And the 2nd example:

Hi, Robert! Wow! What’s that smell?

Hi, Jack! It’s the smell of pizza!

Oh, I see! Robert, may I have one piece, please?

When we ask someone for permission, this person can give us permission or refuse it!

If the person wants to give us permission, he or she can use the following construction:

In the first place we put the word “yes”. After that we use the personal pronoun. And then we need to put the word “may”.

If the person wants to refuse permission, he or she can use the following construction:

In the first place we put the word “no”. After that we use the personal pronoun. And then we need to put the word “may” with particle “not”.

Let’s look through the previous examples once again and compare them:

The 1st example:

Alvin, may I have some more, please?

No, you may not! I’m sorry, but I have to leave some cheese for my kids!

And the 2nd example:

Oh, I see! Robert, may I have one piece, please?

Yes, you may, Jack!

We can see that in the 1st example the mouse used the phrase “No, you may not”. It means that he refused permission.

And in the 2nd example we see that the man used the phrase “Yes, you may”. It means that he gave permission.

Daisy, we’ve told you how to ask for, give and refuse permission.

Now we would like to check your knowledge.

Sure. No problem!

Listen to the first part of the dialogue and choose the right variant to reply.

Dialogue 1.

May I have some more vegetables, please?

Let’s check the right answer.

Sure! Here you are!

Dialogue 2.

Grandma, may I taste the coconut cookies, please?

Check yourselves.

Not yet. They are still very hot!

Dialogue 3.

Mum, may I drink the juice in my bedroom, please?

Let’s check.

Yes, you may. Just don’t spill it!

Dialogue 4.

Daddy, may I ask Henry to come for supper, please?

Let’s check the right answer.

Of course, you may. It’s your cousin!

Dialogue 5.

May I brush my teeth, please?

Check yourselves.

Yes, you may. The bathroom is free!

Dialogue 6.

Mum, may I skip my school for a day, please?

Let’s check.

No, you may not! You are not sick!

Well done, Daisy!

Now you know how to ask for, give and refuse permission!

That’s right! Thank you so much, boys!

You’re welcome, Daisy!

Now I have to go! I need to find my friend and apologize to him.

That’s a good idea!

 All right! See you, boys!

See you.

That’s all for today, our dear friends.

See you soon, boys and girls.
