THERE IS

We use this construction with the singular form of the nouns.

For example:

There is a parrot in front of the cage.

THERE ARE

We use this construction with the plural form of the nouns.

For instance:

There are three kittens on the sofa.

Now let’s answer the question:

How do we form sentences with the constructions “there is” and “there are”?

To form positive sentences we put the constructions “there is” and “there are” in the first place. After that we use the singular form of the noun or the plural form of the noun.

For example:

There is a table in the middle of the room.

Or

There are three horses in my garden.

To form negative sentences we put the constructions “there is” and “there are” in the first place. Then we put the particle “not”. The short forms are “there isn’t” and “there aren’t”. After that we use the singular form of the noun or the plural form of the noun.

For instance:

There isn’t a large supermarket in the street.
Or

There aren’t any sweets in the kitchen.

To form questions we need to put the words “is” and “are” in front of “there”. After that we use the singular form of the noun or the plural form of the noun.

For example:

Is there a double-decker bus in the High Street?

Are there three cars in the car park?
