Конспект урока "Connections between people"

—   Hello, our dear friends! My name is Martin Green.

—   And my name is James Wilson. Welcome to our lesson!

—   Today we would like to start the lesson with four short stories.

—   Listen to these stories and you’ll find out the topic of our lesson.

One.

—   Hey, Jacob. How was your day at school?

—   Hey, Jack! It was great! Mrs. Mills praised me for my composition, and I got five. My mum will be proud of me!

Two.

—   Mike, you’ve promised to help me about the house today! Where are you?

—   Yeah, I know, mum. I’m sorry, I forgot! I’ll be home in twenty minutes.

Three.

—   William, how was your first day at work?

—   Oh, Max. It was awful! I had a quarrel with my boss. He is so severe!

Four.

—   Mr. Jones, why did you give me a bad mark?

—   Well, Justin, you wrote the test worse than anyone else. You needed to learn the rule better. That’s why you don’t deserve a good mark.

Now let’s look through the stories once again.

In the first story we see the connection between two classmates.

In the second – between a mother and her son.

In the third – between two colleagues.

And in the last - between a teacher and a pupil.

Now I think you understand that in the lesson today we will:

·        learn new words on the topic «Connections between people»;

And

·        use these words in practice.

Let’s start with the word to avoid.

The meanings are:

1.   to stay away from someone or something;

and

2.   to prevent something from happening or not to allow yourself to do something.

For example:

—   Bobby, don’t avoid the question! Where are you taking these sacks of grain?

—   All right, Josh! I’ll tell you. I want to sell them, because my family needs money.

—   You just needed to tell me about this without making any secrets.

—   Okay, next time I will.

The second word is decent.

This adjective is used to describe something which is considered to be of a socially acceptable standard or good quality.

Look at the example.

—   Ethan, it’s not decent to listen to other people’s private talks. Go to your room!

—   I know, dad! I just wanted to ask you if I can take your credit card and buy an ice-cream cake for me and my friend Mark.

—   Oh, sure. It’s in my wallet. You can buy a cake and nothing else.

—   Okay, dad. Thank you.

The third word is to deserve.

If we say that a person or thing deserves something, we mean that they should have it or receive it because of their actions or qualities.

For example:

—   Hello, Mr. Brown. Philip told me that you were asking for me!

—   That’s right! I wanted to thank you for your hard work yesterday. I think you deserve a holiday. You can have it tomorrow.

—   Oh, really! I’m so happy! Thank you, Mr. Brown.

—   You’re welcome, Harry.

The fourth word is patience.

The meaning of this word is the ability to wait, or to continue doing something despite difficulties, or to suffer without complaining.

Let’s look at the example.

—   Tyler, I’m surprised that you have patience to draw this picture! Son, I’m so proud of you!

—   Thanks, dad! I’m glad to hear such words from you. When I finish, I’ll draw something for you!

—   Oh, great! I’ll buy a frame and hang your picture in my bedroom.

Look at the following two words: praise and to praise.

The word praise is a noun.

The meaning is the expression of respect, honour, and approval.

The word to praise is a verb.

The meaning is to express admiration or approval of the achievements or characteristics of a person or thing.

For example:

—   Brandon, you passed the final exam. I want to praise you for this and give you a little present. I bought a new laptop for you.

—   Oh, thank you, dad, but you didn’t have to! I don’t want to accept such an expensive present. In fact, your praise is the best present for me.

—   How sweet, but you need to take it. You’ll need this laptop for your education.

The following word is severe.

This word has several meanings:

·        Very serious;

·        Not kind or sympathetic;

·        Not willing to accept other people's mistakes;

·        Causing great pain, difficulty, damage, etc.

Look at the example.

—   Alex, how is your new history teacher?

—   Matthew, she is so severe! She doesn’t allow us to use mobile phones even to check the time.

—   Oh, really? How awful! Our history teacher is so kind and her lessons are so interesting.

—   Lucky you.

The following two words are: quarrel and to quarrel.

The word quarrel is a noun.

The meaning is an angry disagreement or argument between two or more people.

The word to quarrel is a verb.

The meaning is to disagree angrily.

Let’s look at the example.

—   Dad, Ryan is throwing apples at me! Tell him to stop!

—   Jennifer, you're the one who started all this!

—   Kids, first of all, stop quarreling! Secondly, stop throwing apples at each other. You’re sister and brother! You need to avoid quarrels and live in peace.

And the last two words are: promise and to promise.

The word promise is a noun.

The meaning is a statement which you make to a person in which you say that you will definitely do something or give something.

The word to promise is a verb.

The meaning is to tell someone that you will certainly do something.

Let’s look at the example.

—   Dillon, you promised to fix my car tomorrow. Do you remember about this?

—   Of course, Kevin! I will fix it. Don’t forget that I always keep my promises.

—   Yeah, sorry. I know about that. I reminded you just in case.

We can use all of these words to talk about connections between people.

Now let’s practise a little bit.

Match the pictures with the words from the box.

The words are: to avoid, decent, to deserve, patience, to praise, to promise, to quarrel and severe.

Let’s check.

One. Severe.

Two. To deserve.

Three. To avoid.

Four. To praise.

The following pictures.

Let’s check.

Six. To promise.

Listen to the dialogues and fill in the gaps with the words from the box.

Dialogue 3.

—   Hi, dad. Did you go to school today?

—   Yes, Christopher, I did. And I spoke to your English teacher. She said that you used bad words on the lesson.

—   It’s true, but it’s not my fault. Ryan is always teasing me. I’m so tired of it.

—   Oh, I see. I’ll talk to his parents, but you need to … using such words in your speech.

—   All right, dad. I’ll try to keep … next time. He is just such a nasty boy.

—   I understand that but remember what I told you. Don’t worry, we’ll figure it out.

—   Okay, daddy. Thank you.

—   You’re welcome, son.

Check yourselves.

—   Today we’ve learnt new words which we can use to talk about connections between people.

—   We also practiced using these words in different situations.

—   That’s all for today. We hope you liked our lesson.

—   See you soon, boys and girls.
