Great! Now listen to the story “Jack and the Beanstalk”.
Once upon a time there was a young boy called Jack Trott. He lived with his mother in a little house in the country. Jack and his mother were very poor. All they had was a cow, and its name was Daisy.
One morning Mrs. Trott woke Jack up and said:
“Wake up, Jack! You must help me. There is nothing to eat for breakfast this morning. We haven’t got any food. And we can’t buy it, because we haven’t got any money.”
“Oh, no! What should we do now?”
“Jack, you must go to the market, sell Daisy and buy some bread, milk and honey on your way home.”
“Mother, I don’t want to sell Daisy! She’s my friend.”
“I’m sorry, Jack, but we have no other choice.”
“Okay, mother!”
Jack took Daisy and went to the town. On the way to the town he met an old man. The man saw the boy and said:
“What’s that you’ve got there, young boy? Let me look at your cow!”
After those words the old man looked at Daisy, nodded his head and said:
“Yes! This cow is just right for me! Will you give it to me, please?”
“I’m sorry, but I can’t give you the cow. I’m going to the market to sell it."
“Well… I’ve got a brilliant idea! I’ll give you these magic beans for your cow.”
“I don’t want your beans, I need money. We haven’t got any food at home.”
“Young boy, these beans are magic! Take them, and you’ll see what I mean.”
After those words Jack took the beans and went back home. When Jack’s mother saw the beans, she got very angry and started shouting at Jack:
“You are a silly boy! Why haven’t you got any money for the cow?”
“Mother, I’m so sorry, but these beans are magic!”
“Magic beans?! What a silly idea!” – said Mrs. Trott and threw the beans out of the window. The beans landed in the garden.
The next morning Jack looked out of the window and saw a tall beanstalk in the garden.
He went outside and saw that it was taller than the house. Jack was very excited and called his mother. When Mrs. Trott came to the garden, Jack said:
“Mother, look at this beanstalk! It’s very tall. Can I climb it?”
“Yes, you can, but be careful, please! You don’t know what you’ll find at the top.”
Then Jack started to climb up the beanstalk. When he reached the top at last, Jack saw a beautiful castle.
After that he went inside and saw a giantess. The giantess looked at the boy and said:
“Who are you? What are you doing here? You can’t come in here. My husband isn’t here now, but when he comes back, he will eat you!”
When Jack heard that, he got scared. Then the castle started to shake. The giantess shouted:
“Come with me to the kitchen. You must hide! My husband mustn’t see you! Quick!”
When they appeared in the kitchen, the giantess said:
“Get in the oven! You can hide behind the cake!”
“Please, don’t let the giant eat me!”
“Don’t worry, little boy! I won’t let him do that!”
After those words the boy hid in the oven.
When the giant came to the kitchen, he said:
“Hello, wife! What’s that smell? I smell a young boy!”
“Don’t be silly, my dear. There aren’t any boys here. I’m cooking you some meat.”
Then the giantess brought the giant’s breakfast and put it on the table in front of him. The giant ate the breakfast and asked his wife to bring him his hen.
The giantess brought the giant a little brown hen and put it on the table. When she left the kitchen, the giant looked at his hen and said:
“Lay!”
And the little brown hen laid an egg. It was made of gold. Jack saw everything through a hole in the oven door. Then the giant fell asleep.
Jack slowly opened the oven door, climbed out of the oven and walked to the table. He took the giant’s hen and ran to the door.
He was very happy! But suddenly the magic hen opened its mouth and made a loud sound:
“Cluck-cluck!”
The giant opened his eyes, saw the boy and got very angry. Jack ran to the beanstalk as fast as he could. The giant ran after him.
The boy started to climb down the beanstalk. The giant came down after him, but the boy was faster! When the boy appeared in the garden, he shouted:
“Mother, help! The giant is coming. We must chop down the beanstalk!”
“Oh, okay!”
After that Jack’s mother ran to the house, took the axe and returned to the garden. Then she chopped down the beanstalk. The giant crashed to the ground. Nobody ever saw him again.
Jack and his mother became very rich due to the hen laying golden eggs, so they lived happily ever after.
